San Diego CCW class was uninformative

What was your experience with your CCW class? Did you learn much?

The first hour of the class was given by a USCCA rep trying to sell his insurance. I'm sure the shop gets kickback from they company.

I expected to talk about scenarios l, when it's leagel to draw, when not but I don't feel like I really got that. They did mention it but not in a way that has me feeling confident about the law at all.

They showed some example videos and I expected a solid lesson at the end of each but instead they ended with...well this happened.

I dunno, it felt like it was a required content poor class that checks a box but doesn't inform. I just expected more.

This is quite common. Keep in mind the lay person is not very skilled. The majority of people who take a CCW class barely know how to operate a firearm. Many times its the first time people even touch their firearm. So the bar is pretty low.

I've heard of some CCW classes that were good but taught by experienced shooters. Those with backgrounds in LEO or USPSA who side hustle as an instructor, but typically they can't talk too much about scenarios because that might be misinterpreted as legal advice. Depending on the instructor and instructor experience you'll get a wide range of quality for ccw course.

I have my ccw certification but don't speak of actual incidents. As it might confuse people. In my area, you have a standard course that's approved by the County or Sheriff's office. Outside of that you can't teach.

This makes sense, cautious to not offer leagel advice, which is exactly what we needed but protects the shop from any errors they might make.

Annoying but I guess it's the world we live in now.

Many training classes (CCW, NRA, CRPA, etc) I’ve been to are selling some type of insurance now. Either CCW safe or USCCA.

I have been in classes where everyone just lets them talk and that’s it. One class a student mentioned USCCA leaving people high and dry and another saying they all suck and Attorneys on Retainer was the best.

It’s the state of affairs now and there is obvious kick backs.

I compare it to YouTube and their 2 kinds of ads, in video ads and regular ads. Even if you have YouTube premium, you get in video ads 🙄

I’ve renewed my CCW a few times now. My first class was not great , but at the time, I also sucked pretty badly. Blue Ridge Consulting. The legal part was pretty good. The shooting part was just ok, but I liked it and realized I needed more training .

Threat Scenarios: Great outfit, renewed with them a few times. For new shooters , a day of legal discussions. Second day: Holster basics, Drills , shooting around barriers , Shooting on the move , shooting without sights, shooting from position 2 at close range and more . Only needed a 1/2 day for renewal but paid extra for the whole day . Test was harder than the new state qual : scored on a USPSA target 10 shots each at 5,10,15,20 and 25 yards … with each gun.
Great instructors!

Sat in on a Defensive Accuracy LLC course with Denise and RO’s. Drilled fundamentals hard . Some of the same instructors from Threat Scenarios. All pros.
