AR Pistol semi vs SSE via PPT

As I understand it (what I read on Google and some threads on here) if I someone sells me a SSE AR15 pistol build (that is currently semi-auto configuration) via PPT then I am able to designate it as a semi auto since it is in that current configuration? Is that the way all FFL dealers do it?

I see pistols up for sale on here and some are semi-auto and some are SSE. So does it really matter if I go for a semi-auto vs SSE. In theory if I do either then by the time the PPT happens then I have a semi-auto anyways?

I would love if someone that is a FFL would weigh in on this as well.

No not really. I just thought if it was semi auto on record that it is better in the laws view. Are they pretty much the same thing? Also if I ever wanted to get rid of it looks like semi auto is more valued. That was my reasoning anyways.

Semi is more valued, but it costs. If you aren't adding it to your CCW it doesn't change much. Decide if it's worth the premium for a ppt, for me personally it is not
 
It’s legally ambiguous. People say semi auto is “better” because there’s no real ambiguity. SSE with a different upper is no different than buying any other pistol and changing it functionally, like caliber swaps by changing the upper, etc.

No one’s ever been charged for the SSE thing and imo if you’re in a legal spot to be worried about this you have way bigger problems than what your DROS paperwork says.

Don’t shoot anyone with it and you’re fine
