Calguns FB Update

For one as I just looked, there was a total of 53 folks on this site right now with 34 members on it, not really conducive id someone is wanting to sell anything from a marketing standpoint.

The rate of growth we've had was good for us. If this site grew too fast, we'd struggle too. Fortunately, we had some initial spikes early on and hopefully we put in enough layers to support growth if we get a larger spikes. It may not seem like a lot of people but we're getting a lot of people coming by daily. The way CN is setup now, 100% of the traffic hits the server, they're currently hosted on inmotionhosting.com with the domain pointing directly to the server. On the cloud, they had similar caching but it likely wasn't optimized well, so their costs went up. ~15% traffic gets through to the servers on our site with most being cached, which makes us faster and more secure, our IP is gated. You can see the steps we've done here. Kes could follow this as a guide, since I documented most of the big optimizations for posterity.

The big shift was when they went from 3.8 to 6.x. They had image optimizations that limited sizes to 60k-100k per file they lost. After the upgrade, it ballooned to 6MB x 5 per post, so their traffic cost doubled in ~2 months.

Our traffic has grown 4x with the recent influx back. We "shouldn't" have any scaling issues but we'll have to cross that road when we get there. As of now, we should be able to grow another 10x with minimal changes.

Again well said, most don't understand that more usage incurs an increase in cost.

Here we have the opportunity to move on to something better and people are still caught up with whether or not Calguns is coming back.

It was never dead and if you got so much moxy about it why can't you chip in 5 bucks a month for this site showing support?

Hopefully calguns can be salvaged. It'd be great to grab my feedback.

I wonder what the best way is to migrate or point more users to this forum? I will ask my buddies at the local LGSs to put in word.

Elon Musk needs to buy Calguns but sadly he wants nothing to do with this State anymore...
4th generation SF born, it's so sad to see what has become of this once great state.

I definitely wouldn't want it to be dead ...yet, or even ever probably.. As much as I like this new setup and it runs smooth like butter its still missing the community really.
marketplace still isn't really showing much transactions going on, I just checked out the deals, sales,coupons area and 1 posting only this whole time ca guns has been active. I don't even think anyone on cal guns is talking about this site. I heard about it on reddit and I doubt many cal gunners are even on reddit. Dont get me wrong this site has potential its just not there yet.

Not sure if you’re talking about CAguns or Calguns.org. Here there’s updated listings quite frequently. Don’t look at the forum side, click classifieds and it’s better.

We’re still the new kid on the block so it’s expected to take time to grow. Word continues to spread so just gotta be patient and list if you want to. Regardless of our traffic, I’ll keep the site up for the 2A community. I’ve always said it’s up to community to make it but there’s a bit of division in 2A.

Calguns has been a s*** show for a couple years now.

I had 100+ positive itrader and since that’s been lost the marketplace went down the tubes.

I’ve been on Calguns since 2008 and it’s sad the direction it’s been going down. Hopefully it turns around for the better.

I’m sure the calguns will come back up. Perhaps, Kes has something up his sleeve and will shock us all. I don’t want to be negative about the situation.

I ask you guys, if you want CAguns.net to be successful please be positive about the 2A space. Hopefully 2A can have a turn around in CA. If you know of events or ideas to spread the word. Perhaps that’s a better way than to wish CGN doesn’t come back up.

The thing that calguns did well was build community. We’ll eventually organize some events but that’s not my forte. If you have suggestions I’m open to it.
