It's for show for gun people.

For those who are still asking themselves as to why TF a BBQ merits particular attention to one’s choice of non-concealed sidearm… This is very much a Texas thing in its origins, I came to understand that this was a “thing” the first time I went to the OG Salt Lick location southwest of Austin. When I moved there in 1999, Salt Lick was more or less situated at the threshold of where all things ATX ended and reverted to Texas-proper. At my first visit, I noticed that the parking lot security guard was holstering a WAY too nice of a revolver for purposes of mere traffic management + allowing those to depart who weren’t *too* drunk (Fun fact - TX open container law prior to 2001 was that any open containers in the vehicle had to be “beyond the reach” of the driver…). Apparently even on duty the guard was more than happy to accessorize for the occasion. This was long before TX authorized open-carry for the general population two decades later, of course…
