I use newspaper for cleaning. A good use for useless propaganda. I'd use newspaper for TP if my finger didn't break through.

I prefer the corrugated or stippled textured foam or rubber mats because the pins, spring and other circular parts don't roll away.

Plus they are ok to tap on if you need to get a pin or lever moving.

I been using one of those cheap rubberized cleaning mats with the magnetic spots for a good minute. Onetigris brand.
Before that it was an old xl desktop mouse mat.

I use cut up cardboard boxes. I just throw it away after I’m done; no washing needed.

Pins and springs, I use a harbie freight magnet plate or an old stainless steel bowl.

I have a standard gray rubber mat with built-in magnets. Works great, and the magnets are useful for small parts and pins.
