What is the minimum age I can gift a handgun to my kid? Does caliber make a difference, I’d like to gift a 22LR pistol.

I believe 18 for a gift and he has to have a FSC. In CA you need to be 21 to purchase a handgun.

Unpacking a bit...

Both CA law and Federal law prohibit an FFL from transferring a handgun to under-21.

But, as noted, CA allows an intrafamilial transfer, parent to child or grandparent to grandchild, to 18, 19, 20 (as well as 21+). No FFL required; FSC indeed required, as the paperwork asks for the number.

Caliber is not relevant for intrafamilial gifts.

Can also LOAN a firearm to under-18; see PC 27505(b)(2-5), https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?lawCode=PEN&sectionNum=27505.
