I’ve played my Native American flutes in the tunnels on the north side of the GG bridge. The echos and reverberations are awesome.
The acoustics one would get in those 16" gun emplacements would be off the hook and they go deep, if I ever go again I will take a guitar.
The whole area bristled with guns of every caliber along with heavy beach defenses, if one hikes the mountains just beyond the coastal flats there are still remains of heavy trench systems with rotted wood sidings, climb to the top of them and there is a lot of old AA concrete emplacements. One of the pictures in the video shows a large steel platform, the site was called Eagles peak, it held massive hearing devices to detect incoming planes along with many gun emplacements. There is still the remains of the concrete road that was used to service/supply them (blocked off from traffic entering with old steel gates from what is now public roads) but the distance and incline will test one's heart for sure, the lack of any graffiti says it all.
Every small municipal airport in the North Bay Area started out as a Army Air Corp base for the most part, Santa Rosa, San Rafael, Petaluma etc, was a few in the Bay Area itself like Hayward that the AAC flew out of.
At one time the San Franciscan Bay was the main hub for Pacific operations during WW2 (and well before) for the Navy/Army and in the post war years, anyone shipping out for combat the last thing they saw was the Golden Gate be it Army or Marines. The headquarters for the Western defense was located at the Presidio in SF till the 90's. The Navy had Mare Island, Alameda Island, Hunters Point Naval yard (huge dry docks), Treasure Island and the Concord Naval Weapons Station that held the nukes for submarines in it's later years but all the rest of the ordnance prior to them.
Sunnyvale Naval Air station (Moffet Field), Fort Ord, all of it got wiped out during the Clinton admin, the amount of civilian job loss was staggering.
