CCW Orange County CCW

Hello, I submitted my application for OCSD initial application in June. I completed everything except the CCW 16 hour course. I did the live scan before the submission of the app. Should I just wait until I get the interview to do the CCW course? Thanks yall
yeah. Sign up for course after approval

Is there any reason your app would need additional scrutiny or that you'd be denied? If there's some doubt, maybe wait. If not, you can do the training within the window (6 months I think)? I'd just work backwards from your interview date by a few weeks just in case you end up wanting to change what guns are qualified with and recorded on the cert/reflected on your eventual permit.

Doesn’t OC allow online training? Try The CCW School
Yes, for part of it (like the first 8 of the 16 hour initial training), but that's doesn't really change the second day range requirement which is the main thing and usually the other half of the instruction. Online portion is good if you're busy, can't get time off work, or learn better that way/already know everything they're going to be teaching. Otherwise some do prefer/benefit from in-person.

Artifex is online training module, like 4-5 hours of a slide deck and topics/questions, then a live-fire range day to qualify and certify all the firearms being submitted.

I personally did that part first. I didn’t want to be unprepared

Mods are pretty fast still as well. Below 90 days (closer to 80ish recently) despite it being a lower priority than processing new and renewal applicants.

Once the permit duration is extended to 3 years hopefully wait times drop further.

Firearms portion was finally completed:
4/30/2025 - CA & FBI Completed
7/07/2025 - Firearms Completed
Went down the Reddit rabbit hole and other folks had the same "delay." Some were saying OC is just overwhelmed but not sure how that affects the livescans getting done quicker?
Everyone thread I click on has a different timeline. Yours give me hope and I need to just be patient. Worst case, if this rolls into 2027- I get a 3 year CCW!

That's only if the agency you are applying with decides to do it 3 years instead of 2.

It’s CA change January 1 2027, not per agency discretion.
PC 26220 was amended to extend the maximum allowable length of a CCW in California from 2 years to 3 years.

It does not require any authorizing agency to increase the length of the CCWs they approve from 2 years to 3 years, it simply allows them to do so, so it's 100% per agency discretion.

They ask for way too much info on the specific firearm configurations during the paperwork part of certifying or for mods for my taste. Artifex is preferred, personally.
Asking is ok, but are they ok to give you certs if you have mod'd guns such as triggers, mag disconnect and LCI removal?

(a) Except as otherwise provided in this section, a license issued pursuant to Section 26150 or 26155 is valid for any period of time not to exceed three years from the date of the license.
The 3 years is a cap, not a floor.
