Pistol red dot glass cracked by ejected brass?

On my Sig P365, the Vortex Defender-CCW has 3 tiny cracks in the glass at the edges. Vortex said it will be covered by the warranty and they paid my shipping. I hope to get it back soon. The cause is unknown but the Vortex rep thinks it is from ejected brass hitting the glass. I asked if they thought anything could be done to prevent that from happening. They didn't have a suggestion.

Is this common?

I have been looking at the red dot covers like Opticgard. Have any other ideas?

Until I could determine exactly what caused it, I wouldn't do any thing just yet... maybe just wait for it to come back from Vortex and resume playing.

That would seem like pretty aggressive ejection to me. I see people racking the slide on a table with their red dot. Granted that probably doesn't include direct glass contact.

I haven't heard of that being an issue but they do make a variety of protective glass films. If that were the case maybe a protective film would keep it from happening again.

Roughly how many rounds have you put through your P365?

Suggestion: have you taken apart your P365 and looked at your extractor? If so, are there signs where the extractor may be damaged/wrapped and pulling brass out in an odd direction.

It's not impossible, but I have rarely heard this happen unless its an original extractor with like 30k rounds through the pipe...

I might have 300 rounds through it. Maybe more but not much more.

That's barely broken in - chances of it being an extractor issue should be slim.

Could it be the type of ammo you're using? I imagine "hotter rounds" may eject more forcibly?

All speculation points here, but glad Vortex is taking care of the optic. I've never heard a bad scenario when it comes to utilizing their warranty program...

UPDATE:

FYI Vortex sent me a new unit. Turn around time was barely more than a week total with shipping both ways. Once tracking confirmed they received my optic they sent the new one out in 2 days.
