News Problem (apparently) at the Calguns Marketplace

Have you ever met Kes? Talked to him?

He should have stopped being a-hole about 20 years ago. He has a very long track record of ticking people off. This is one of the reasons that his forum has changed so much over the decades, with a large fraction of the discussion topics and of the user leaving over the years, and a different set of users getting attracted. For a while, this worked pretty well, because (a) there were plenty of users that liked the style of Calguns "discourse", and (b) there were lots of advertisers willing to throw in large amounts of money. Internet advertising is really amazingly powerful; look at how many billions companies like Google or Facebook pull in every week, and with thousands of active users, the forum was a license to print money for Kes.

The problem arose when we combined Kes' difficulty in dealing with people (see above) with his personal life or psychiatric health circling the drain. And giving his personality, I don't see a way out. Maybe in a while his widow will be able to sell the remaining assets, but there will be little left the way things are going.

We don’t need to go that direction. Some people make mistakes. Whatever he’s dealing with now, good luck to him. From my understanding they paid a lot more than advertisers pay here. I try to keep things transparent and affordable because it’s a niche community. In the bigger picture big tech gobbles up everything.
