Does anyone have any information on where to shoot past 1000 yards in the SoCal area? I know there was a range near San Luis Obispo but I think it’s closed if someone can confirm.

Thanks for the suggestion, I heard about that club and the matches they have. Unfortunately my rig right now is not setup for an F-Class match. I’d have to loose my adjustable bag Rider and my muzzle brake which means I’d have to find and test a new load since the barrel harmonics are changed. It’s not that I’m not open to it but rather the 30 cal cartridge I went down the rabbit hole with, I intended to shoot near a mile, or at least close.

Closest to LA county is around the blue star memorial highway near Victorville. It’s not glamorous, and you’re right up the DOD’s back yard. Edward’s Air Force Base is over there too.

It’s also fire season right now so you’ll have to wait a couple months.

Mesquite Hills near Mojave is a lot more chill but further away and involves OHV or a lot or hiking.

For BLM you’re going to have to find your own spots honestly.

I’m basically just telling you about places I’ve been to by looking on a map and going to check it out myself.

For a day trip be prepared to travel for 10 hours round trip and shoot for 1 or 2 hours. It’s better to camp over a weekend and get a solid day in.

Desert Marksman, 20mins south of Palmdale has 1k events. It’d be hard to shoot at that range on non event days because the entire range has to be closed for it. I’m told you can try but if other people start trickling in not sure if they wait until you’re down or what. Unless you want to shoot at night when you’re pretty much guaranteed to not be disturbed. But you gotta be a member for that. IMG_0316.webp

California tactical academy has a 1000 yard range in Piru. Used to be called Wes Thompson ramge before they sold to CTA. For a mile its going to be BLM or the ELR matches at coalinga.

If you position yourself right, you can get damn near 2k yards at the BLM lands near Rosamond. It gets pretty packed on the weekend days. So you'll have to go early morning on a week day.
And most days it's windy as hell.
I've gotten super lucky with a good shot in that area personally.

I DM’d you for the location. I’ve been near rattle snake road near rosamond but I could only find a place to setup which stretched out to 800 yards

Out in Ocotillo Wells there's a very private burn victim range that has targets out to 1.5 and 2 miles. (the target stands at that distance are about 8-10 full sheets of ply wood combined to make one huge stand..) It's right off highway 78. (shown with the red line a the top of the pic)

Also on BLM land you can shoot out to 1200 yards towards the Fish Creek Mountains just south of the 78. (shown by the smaller red line at the bottom of the pic) This spot you need to shoot up on a hill so it's not the same as shooting on a flat plain.

Also as Plenty_Pack_556 stated, Camp Pendleton is where a lot of people I know go but the long range is not open to the public.

Let us know if you find another good place.

Matt

Neither was mine. Burbank was cool about it and put us with brakes or NRA "non-eligible" rifles at the right side. We shot for fun, scores not reported to NRA. Haven't shot with Burbank since Covid when we moved out of LA. Still worth checking out for 600yd (Midrange) and 1,000yd (Long range) prone matches:

Since moving to South OC I was shooting at Pendleton with Santa Margarita Gun Club, but unfortunately Range Control is doing away with recreational shooting.

long rifle was always weird about that. Do they still go by long rifle? It’s been a long long time since I was on Pendleton.
