Rifle optics for PCSL/multi-gun/mid-range carbine?

What do you like for carbine optics for CQB out to 200yd distances?

Pro's and cons?

Think competition (PCSL, multi-gun...) and defensive...

I personally like ACOGs As I suffer from astigmatism. I recently got a VCOG 1-8 and I am really enjoying that though.

My first year at pcsl nats I used a razor 1-6, and switched to a red dot mid match and did noticeably better after. I have run red dots at pcsl all subsequent years.

The main reason for my preference is I train carbine by shooting pcc at local USPSA matches with a red dot. An lpvo might be objectively superior, but I spend more time behind a red dot and am more comfortable with one and that makes a huge difference. If you shoot a lot of lpvo, I would not switch to red dot if someone told you it was superior.

From a more granular perspective, I find that LPVOs are great at 1x shooting close and magnified at range. They are not good at shooting farther targets at 1x.
I have good eyesight, and the pcsl minimum target size is easy enough to see unmagnified - so I find I save time just shooting at 1x... It also makes transitions easier as I dont have to look over the scope. The more often magnification becomes necessary, the bigger the advantage an lpvo has.

PCSL is max 200 yards with minimum 8 moa targets and is designed around being able to only use a red dot, I have tried with a magnifier and without and I prefer just using a raw red dot. At the West Coast pcsl I had no issue hitting first round hits on the furthest targets with just the red dot. LPVOs for me just don't work on 1x, I can't use them both eyes open for some reason. But a lot of people can and a lot of people like Kyle Litzie like LPVOs for PCSL. It's really personal preference, but even shooting PRS I have found that I'm using like 12x magnification on 1-1.5 moa targets way beyond 200 yards. If you were doing actual multigun outside of the bay area where they have 600 yard targets I think an LPVO makes more sense. But this year for BARC I'm shooting limited which is no magnifier, but also unlike PCSL the USPSA multigun rules don't allow you to take off your magnifier for the other stages. As with most things though there's no one right answer and you can do what you like, I would definitely go see what you can do at 200 yards with just a red dot though you may surprise yourself. 3x magnification doesn't really help all that much at only 200 yards.

oh and another consideration, how crisp is your red dot with your eyes? if you are already seeing a weird shape at 1x, at 3x or 5x it's going to be bigger and weirder and may obscure the point of aim.

Depends on your eye dominance, eyesight, reinforced muscle memory on years with an Acog so all you do is Bindon aiming bc that's all your mind will let you do under stress.

I currently have a Razor Gen 3 1-10 on my go-to competition rifle. It's a little overkill for most things, but my friends and I play games with longer engagement distances on private property where it comes in handy. I wish it weren't FFP. I don't think anything 10 and under needs FFP. It's just extra weight for no good reason. This is something I have preached for a long time to people asking about "LPVO" optics, and here I am being the hypocrite. I hate myself.
