Rifle optics - scopes may be redundant

Efficiency and how good micro optics are getting I’m thinking typical rifle scopes could be redundant/outdated.

For me they even replaced iron sights, and I have astigmatism so that’s saying more than the words!

The introduction of gold illumination has opened my eyes to the world of what you guys call red dot optics. Finally, I understand the speed, efficiency and clarity that dot sights offer.

The Holosun ARO with gold circle dot reticle has outmatched my iron sights for speed and accuracy, and can be used in low light conditions. I love it!

To build on that impressive optic, I thought I’d try the primary arms CLx 3x, and wow it could replace the Holosun as a dot sight, it’s that good.

It uses red illumination with an etched reticle which my eyes can see crystal clear. I’m Impressed and it weighs hardly anything more than the Holosun.

5-ish ounces for a 3x scope with mount!

I’m already planning to put one of these 3x optics on my deer hunting rifle.

What do you guys think, and have you tried either of these optics?

I’m a huge prism fan. I have the PA on a Ruger SFAR. Very nice setup!!

I haven’t considered the gold color for a modern optic after being less than impressed with a gold (amber?) ACOG many moons ago. Might have to revisit a gold optic made in this century, haha!!

When I got the Holosun ARO gold, I thought nothing could be better, then last week I got the CLx 3x and I was wrong, it’s better, especially for a hunting rifle.

The eye relief on the CLx is probably what will limit the rifles it can be mounted on. It’s something Iike 3.75” and that wouldn’t fit on a typical bolt action rifle because the base can’t extend back far enough but on an AR it mounts perfect.

I have one of those 3x micro prisms. I like it a lot but I prefer 5-25x while hunting

I'm currently using the Sig Romeo 5 and Juliet 3 setup and the eye relief on the Juliet leaves much to be desired. Not only that but my astigmatism goes nuts with the magnifier.

Only a scope can get the reticle and target in perfect focus. Good vision can't do that alone. You get one or the other in focus.

It also applies to 1x scopes. Try it and see.

I don't get the separate magnifier concept, doesn't make logic to my engineers brain. I would toss it and get a magnified optic!

For my astigmatism, the gold illumination works the best and the circle dot works better than the dot only. Holosun offers the same ARO with dot only, no circle and I didn't like it. I ordered it by accident and that's why I got to try both.

The ARO has shake-awake and free eye relief, so technically I consider it better suited for SD rifle than the CLx 3x.

The CLx 3x, illumination doesn't turn on or off by itself. You have to press to turn on and press to turn off but the reticle still works without illumination.

How important is illumination? Last weekend deer hunting, I took one of my iron sight rifles and ya it doesn't allow sighting 1/2 hour before sunrise, I realized I like illumination.

The Clx 3x has wide field of view for a magnified optic but it does have optimum eye relief so you do have to position it in the right location on your rifle. This is not an issue with an AR. It would mount on the 2nd or 3rd rail slot from the rear or directly in front of your rear BUIS. It only comes with red illumination which is fine but I would prefer the gold like on the Holosun.

I mounted both optics on this clone scalarworks QD mount, and yes it returns to zero. It's also a little more robust than the mount that came with the CLx 3x. It's cheap - get it, thank me later!

If your rifle has BUIS then the QD mount is no brainer but, do rifles even need BUIS anymore?
