Question So Cal BLM target shooting …

The BLM field office in Barstow is a joke. I called numerous times, left voice mails, sent emails, and no one answered. I tried for months. Does anyone here have any personal experience with target shooting on BLM land near Irwin Road by Barstow? I’m just looking for a place to try out to 500+ yards. If you rather not answer it publicly feel free to PM .

Legal there to shoot. We use to go mid 90s til I moved out of ca in 2020. Basically behind calico.

Personally, I would seek out an actual, uniformed BLM ranger in that area to ask. How in the H does one do that when you get no useful response from the field office?…good question. Many things may have changed from the ‘90’s. Areas sometimes get closed down with little/no public notice. Online resources published by public agencies are often lacking as well. Speaking in advance with those who are the ones to write citations regarding activities on public lands seems to be the safest bet, if you want to keep your toys.

I looked at the interactive map and the area seems to be good to go. I just need the BLM field office to get back to me. I called, left a VM, and sent them an email again. Government's efficiency and customer service at its best. LOL

I would research the spot yourself. Some mobile apps will show BLM land...I think OnX does.

If you happen to have an Android phone, you can modify OsmAnd to show BLM land locations. This is what I did and use.

Thanks. I have their interactive map on my phone. I think it's the same data we are all looking at but it doesn't show current local restrictions. So I need the local office to confirm that it's good to go and there are currently no restrictions. Maybe there's another way to do that?

Ah ok, ignore the DM then. At least here for San Diego county, there are fire restrictions but the land is open for shooting.

My family still goes in the same area. And a few others are always shooting in same area.

OP can also try contacting sheriff dpt too. Last I got to go was couple years ago for an overnighter. Over here I shoot blm land and spots you can’t shoot are marked

Maybe I should try that. My local sheriffs are very responsive at least in my personal experience. Thanks for the reminder.

Years ago I called Barstow blm when the sb23 was passed and shooting registered aw on blm.

The head ranger was Barry Nelson at the time he called me back and was very cool. He said I’ll make it easy. If you can own the firearm legally you can shoot it on blm land. He was also a shooter too. Ended up seeing him patrolling in calico hills little after. Was cool guy in person too. That was only 1 of three times I seen a ranger out there.

Pretty sure these days they are busy doing ohv enforcement with all the inexperienced sxs doing sxs things.
