Summer break took its toll on proficiency. Getting my teen back up…

So, following his Defensive Handgun 2 class, my eldest teen got pretty lazy throughout summer break. For the past few months, he’s done almost no dry fire at all, so I figured it was time to get him back into it.

Since shooting proficiency is definitely a perishable skill, we started the morning with 20-min of dry practice, working on trigger control. Then headed to the range this afternoon to see where he is at. And yep, definitely perishable. Holding groups out at 10, but things started breaking down at 15. I’d opine he was overthinking the smaller target and trying a too hard to make the shot perfect.

Still proud of where he is, though. Fundamentals are clearly still there. Now it’s just a matter of getting him back to consistency, then building that consistency back up at speed.

keep an eye on his lead levels. Growing kids and all that. they tend to not be as crazy about deleading post range trips

Thanks!!! Yeah, he/we immediately wash hands up with D-Lead after every clock out.

But yeah, that actually reminds me… I should probably get my levels checked too.

I was lucky in TX we had all out door ranges, way easier to keep the levels in check. My oldest does okay, until he discovered girls and the Fire Department. No consistent pratice like you two have going.

The biggest contributor to lead levels by far is breathing in the aerated lead from firing the guns. Shooting outdoors and wearing a mask (N100) when shooting indoors resulted in the biggest drop for my lead levels. I also shoot TMJ or Federal Syntech when indoors.

The wiping down and changing clothes/shoes is primarily for not tracking it in where pets and young kids can pick it up.

I have range clothes and heavy metal detergent plus range shoes that stay in the garage.

I only go to an indoor range about twice a month and usually stay no more than 30 minutes. I still need to get my lead levels checked, but with that kind of exposure, how concerned should I be?

Also, any recommendations for a good N100 mask? Thanks in advance.

The 3M brand of N100 mask is the gold standard. Readily found on amazon.

I think it really depends more on how good the range ventilation is, but twice a month seems like a non-issue

3m just watch out for counter fits. I spend a bit more and get them from actual stores.

Not sure exactly how many days or how much time is “too much” it can vary depending on the range airflow, filtering, ammo…but it does go up fast on indoor ranges in general. Even outdoor ranges with enclosed areas

So I just have a hard and fast rule to mask up at the line and use TMJ or TSJ.

I mixed it up. It’s actually P100.

I have this one:

But also might pick this up:

Incidentally the elemental lead of the bullet and subsequently the jacketing method is a non issue, elemental lead is so insoluble that people can have bullet fragments in their body and not have high lead levels. The lead styphnate in the primer is the vector because it's soluble and bioavailable. It's similar to leaf paint and leaded gas, each had soluble lead compounds. The syntecs use a lead free primer so they are definitely better. I got a bunch of fiocci lead free primers and my striker fired guns hate them unfortunately, light strikes with m&p and Echelon, run fine in CZ and 2011 though.

You worried about oil? I use the n100’ and toss them instead of the cartridge style.
