Because it was hugely popular in Europe for most of the last century. They got a lot of different languages over there apparently.
 
Yep. Different languages is the primary reason. I have a Model 1934 Beretta that my father got in WWII. It’s marked as a 9mm Corto. Corto means “short. I had to ask what caliber to feed it and here, in the USA, it’s called a .380.

I have a Spanish gun made for the French during WWI labeled as taking a 7.65 round. That’s a .32 acp.
