Worth it to build out custom 1911 9mm single stack?

My hd p4 kind of let me down being little wide for me so I started thinking about a single stack 9mm. I love the parts fitment and smooth slide of the stacatto, unfortunately there's no high end optics ready 9mm 1911 on roster so I started thinking about having a .45acp converted to 9mm using atlas gunworks parts and built by Fusion Firearms or Evolution Armory. But the custom work is not cheap and at that price it's quickly approaching an atlas which would hold better resale value. Going the custom route, I would at least be saving on sales+sin tax. Thoughts?

why not just have the grip reduced? It's polymer and there's a bunch of people that will shape and stipple the grip just like a glock

Mostly cause of the warranty. I’m also holding out hope we’ll get after market grips, safety and triggers

It sounds like there are two questions being posed here: should you keep your staccato HD despite the grip width and if not, what would be a good option for a single stack 9 mm?

Like MrMister suggested, you could reduce the width of the HD or swap it for an eventual aftermarket grip. That's assuming you like everything else about the gun.

If you decide to go the single stack 9 mm route, Springfield armory 1911s in 9 mm would be my recommendation as a base gun for custom work. If you're not tied to the 1911, then you could look at Browning Hi-powers and send them to MK3 for work; I hear they do good things to Hi-powers.

The custom route is a long/pricey route.. ask me how I know! I had 2 full house custom 1911s built back when 9mm 1911s were of no interest to anyone, but I wanted to consolidate my calibers. I probably have 4-5k wrapped up in each one. I could never sell them because nobody would pay near what I have invested. I’d start with the rostered Springfield 9mm loaded, then have an optic cut done. And I would definitely not use fusion

My take is it’s a subjective question. If you want a specific type of gun with specific upgrades with custom fitting, etc and are willing to pay for them, then why not.

I never look at guns as investments, so I’m not worried about recouping money if I sale. I do view guns as tools, so if I can upgrade or customize a tool to work better, or better fit me and my uses I have no problem putting money into it.

It all depends on who does the work.

The best in the business are most often than not booked years out.

The absolute pinnacle custom builders have closed books that will probably never reopen.

The best way to save on sales and sin tax and avoid a long wait is on the secondary market. Perhaps find a single stack 9MM then have it cut for optic.

A true 2011 has a smaller grip radius than the HD4. Take a look at trying to find a used 2011.

Not sure your price range. But in the classifieds there are 2 - Kimber double stack at a reasonable price (1800$ I think) And a 2 - Wilson Combat double stack at decent prices.
The Wilson Combat are definitely worth it and should hold value, if that is a concern.

Or go completely opposite direction and buy a 38 super RIA and drop in a 9mm barrel and call it a day.

After handling and shooting some 1911’s, I think going the 2011 route makes more sense. I prefer a homogenous and flat grip and the gap between the front strap and the grip bumps doesn’t feel as good on the 1911.

It’s true that 2011’s are narrower than the p4 at the top and does fit my hand, and if needed I can still get an extra short trigger fitted and installed.
