As I’m moving forward to get my CCW this freaks me out about carrying in the appendix position.
This awful AIWB ND is certainly frightening.
I would say first remember that the appendix position has many benefits.
Go to Lucky Gunner on youtube and watch Chris Baker's excellent videos on AIWB.
You can reduce your chances for ND with AIWB to near-zero by doing the following:
-High quality gun belt and gun holster for your specific gun
-SLOW and DELIBERATE reholstering technique with hips pushed forward, LOOK the gun into the holster
-The moment anything feels slightly wrong (like unusual resistance in reholstering), STOP, unholster the pistol and set it down safely, and inspect for debris/stray shell casings/loose drawstrings from clothing in holster, trigger guard, etc.
-Reholster in dry fire with the exact same slow and deliberate technique to build good habits and reduce the chance of recklessly reholstering in live fire
Some optional things to even further reduce AIWB ND:
-Carry a DA/SA pistol and firmly place your thumb over the hammer as you reholster
-If you have a striker fired pistol, see if they make a device for your slide backplate that acts like a DA/SA hammer where you can stop the trigger from being pulled by firmly placing your thumb over the back of the slide
At the end of the day people make mistakes and machines designed by men will fail. Do what is comfortable, reassuring, and confidence-inspiring to you, whether that be AIWB or 3 o' clock or shoulder holsters or fanny pack carry.
