Stand your ground on law and regulations.
Pros
  • Fast PPT (4 guns ~1 hour) if it's the right person working.
  • Decent ammo prices and availability.
Cons
  • Attempts to deliberately overcharge PPT fees.
  • Not knowledgeable about current laws.
  • Bad customer service experience.
  • Requires appointment for PPT but doesn't actually make it internally.
Called for 4 gun PPT with FFL03 3-in-30 exemption and employee had to "go check". Said "because it's more than 2 firearms our policy for PPT fee is $100 per firearm instead of $10 per firearm".

After explaining that I'm aware that California Penal Code § 28055 limits it to $10 no matter what, they quickly backtracked with "Yeah, nevermind, it'll just be $10 for you then."

Then said it needs an appointment and can only be done on the weekends since "we need to bring in an extra person to do this and it'll take 3-4 hours." Double confirmed the day and time.

The day of they claimed no appointment was made and cannot do it. While arguing, another employee in background said "I think I remember talking to you.", got their manager, and did PPT anyway.
Took them under 1 hour for 4 guns with no issues.

Pickup day they attempted to deny pickup even with successful DROS because of 1-in-30 rule, which was replaced by the 3-in-30 rule. Staff had to argue internally before releasing firearms.

Damaged Rifle stock for PPT transfer
Pros
  • Well stocked
Cons
  • Irresponsible handling of PPT firearm
  • Not accountable
  • Bad Customer experience
I have done business before at Guns Direct for over the counter sales, retail purchases, and PPT (seller/buyer). this time around I had a rifle holding for a PPT transfer. When I came to pick it up, the counter girl unzipped the case and the butt stock was cracked and broken into (4) pieces. This was due to mis-handling as I could tell it was dropped unto the butt. The receiver pin that held the stock in place was hit so hard it was bent. I couldn't unscrew it as it was bent so much I had to cut it in half to get it off the rifle.

Manager had no appologies or "very sorry" responses. He just pointed out the wording in the PPT disclaimer contract and had a stare down with me. As if I was going to go postal on him (yeah in a gunstore?).

I spread the word of my bad experiences from this business to others. And I'll take my business, referrals to other people. a lot of other good shops around that don't cop that kind of attitude.

Disclaimers typically only work for accidental damage which are things typically beyond control.
Not careless handling, improper storage, dropping the firearm, using the wrong tools during inspection, etc.

"CA courts generally scrutinize exculpatory clauses. A waiver is not automatically enforceable, especially to release a business from liability for its own negligence in circumstances where the law or public policy limits such waivers."

What'd you store the gun in while it was there? Most places I've been too tell you theyre not responsible for damage if the gun doesn't have anything to protect it.
Guns direct
Pros
  • Quick
  • knowledgeable
  • Friendly
  • Bulk ammo prices
My experience with them has always been exceptional. They process paperwork quickly, are always friendly and open for business on Sunday. After experiencing the PPT process in many So Cal shops all the way down to San Diego, I can tell you they are by far the fastest at getting through the process once it is your turn. They always have a good amount of staff behind the counter to help.
They also have good prices on the bulk ammo they have in stock.
-on a side note, some places don't do PPTs on weekends, and some won't do PPTs without an appointment. GD does not do any of this. Luckily if the wait is long, you have multiple choices on the same street and in the Burbank area to go to.

Solid Magnolia Ave shop
Pros
  • Pretty efficient at PPT
  • Open on sundays
Cons
  • It’s relatively small so can get crowded and busy
  • I think they stop doing PPT after 330 or something
I think they stop doing PPTs after 330pm or something, but it's usually pretty crowded that time of day and would be a wait. otherwise they do PPTs without complaint and are pretty efficient at them. I literally did a like 8 min PPT with them once. they have a "good" not "great" selection of firearms to peruse while your paper work is being processed and reasonable deals on ammo usually. Solid shop, I've used them pretty frequently. Best strategy is to hit them when they open and they are open on weekends/sundays as well

of note my last PPT there was Feb 16, 2025 and was pretty painless so not that long ago
