Hello Caguns!
I wanted to share a really unusual air rifle I recently picked up and see if anyone here has insight or experience with this kind of piece.
It’s a Strassberger air rifle from Traunstein, Germany, likely made sometime between 1775 and 1800. What makes it stand out is that it uses a compressed air reservoir built into the buttstock, much like the early Girandoni-type rifles. It appears to be all original and definitely shows signs of hand craftsmanship.
From what I’ve read, these early pneumatic rifles were way ahead of their time — powerful, silent, and capable of multiple shots. They were sometimes used in military settings and hunting by wealthy sportsmen.
I’d love to connect with anyone who:
This is easily the oldest airgun I’ve ever come across, and I’m looking to learn more about its history, design, and any comparable examples out there.

- Has seen or handled similar air rifles from this era
- Collects or studies antique airguns
- Can recommend preservation advice (especially regarding the air reservoir)
- Or just enjoys discussing early firearms technology
