I saw a few articles about the rounds for hunting. I got that 270 is just a wee bit better for hunting. I use a 30-06 for hunting. I want a precision rifle for 1000 yards. Just wasn't sure which to go with![]()
6.5 Creedmoor vs. .270 Winchester
Separated by only 0.013 inches of bullet diameter, the 6.5 Creedmoor and the .270 Winchester make an obvious Caliber Battle matchup. Both are used widely by hunters from Alaska to Alabama, both throw similarly weighted bullets traveling similar velocities, and both are chambered in a variety of...www.themeateater.com
Good article - compares the two rounds for hunting purposes.
I have a 308 Ar.10 I want to reach out to 1000 yards I'm sure it's more than capable but I have heard the Creedmore shoots flatter and it's great for 1000 yardsI always wanted to shoot a .270 round. Being a short action guy, I would opt for the Creedmore.
In the end I'll stick with .308. It's just a real darling of a round.![]()
This is for a PRS build. And shooting at Steel to 1000 yards. I use 30-06 for huntingWhat exactly is your intended purpose? general plinking on steel, PRS/NRL comp, Fclass comp?
For each, there would be different recommendations. If you provide more info, we can suggest a few suitable cartridges.
However, a 270 would not be ideal for either of the above. It would be a heck of hunting round though, albeit not at 1000 yards.

Which is why people looked for "shot out" or abandoned caliber prefit compatible actions.6.5 CM.
A .270 has the following weaknesses to deal with that make it a bad idea:
- Far fewer suitable choices for high BC bullets
- Factory guns aren't twisted fast enough to shoot those heavy for caliber high BC projectiles so you need a custom barrel
- Factory ammo isn't available for those heavy projectiles so your going to have to reload and have no real option for factory ammo
- Much higher recoil than 6.5 CM
- Much shorter barrel life
The trick is for the OP to separate tasks so theyre not fully lost when they hit that eventual goal of 1000yd + prs.I owned both, as I hunt as well. I got rid of the .270 and kept the 6.5CM as if takes care of all of my hunting needs. You'll be able to make 1000 yard shots with both, but in my experience, those shots are easier with the CM. I've never shot PRS, but since precision is key, I'd go with the CM since it has a better twist rate.

There is so much there to have dialed in.
Theres reloading, keeping a rifle in tune, reading wind, odd positional shooting, rifle setup for a specific ruleset.
Thats why 1000yds is such an odd goal to add to PRS.Agreed. I don't know much about PRS, but keeping a rifle in tune, reading wind, odd positional shooting etc. is something we do pretty regularly as hunters, so hopefully this gives him a leg up in reaching his goals much sooner.
This is something I hadn't considered. Just how often are you replacing barrels? As a hunter, you typically sight in your rifle pre-season. Maybe take a couple more shots after that to confirm your zero. Maybe a couple more for fun, then that one shot (hopefully only one) to take down whatever your hunting.Barrels are a wear item, its the state of the system over how many rounds that is important info.
