.357 revolver

Looking to add a revolver to my collection. Don’t have much use for one but I figure I have to own one at some point.
Any recommendations for one that should be in the collection ? I’m leaning towards some of the more budget friendly S&W models
S&W 686, S&W 586, Ruger SP101, Ruger GP 100, Taurus 65 or the Taurus Tracker (if you're really on a budget)

In terms of S&W’s offerings, a K-frame with a 4” to 4 1/4” barrel sits in a real sweet spot in a way bulkier L-frames don’t.

If budget is an issue, I suggest looking for a used Model 19 or 66 at your LGS (they seem to pop up at good prices at the spots I go to regularly).

The Ruger GP100 is also a solid choice, but is more like an L-frame in terms of bulk.

S&W Model 19 or 27 would be ideal. The 19 is lighter, but the 27 is more comfortable for full-power loads.

The great thing is there are many of them that are C&R (mfg 1976 or before), so the roster doesn’t apply. Makes finding some sweet deals on Gunbroker a reality.

How does one properly vet a C&R revolver for any potential issues? I want to get a 357 magnum primarily for range use and got scarred away by all the poor reliability claims on modern revolvers.

avoid the short barrels. They are snappy, not the best for shooting tight groups at the range, and really not enjoyable to shoot in general.

If you (the OP), were looking at the budget S&W models, you were likely looking at the Airweight, Bodyguard, etc. Guessing from your first post, you don't have a specific need for one (carry, home defense, etc), so again I'd spend the extra $$ and buy a longer barreled model.

You need to check the cylinder timing and lockup. It’s kinda hard to explain in writing but there’re lots of YouTube videos. If those are good, you’re GTG, aside from the normal used firearm assessments.

SW 686 4inch barrel stainless and love it.
The Colt Python has caught my eye a time or two though....Wouldn't say no to one of those either

686+ 4" - No question

If you're only going to buy one, a pre-lock S&W is solid purchase. I agree with the many who suggest a K or L frame 3 or 4 inch .357/.38. You will never regret such a purchase. They're solid, reliable revolvers.

Doesn’t that kind of rule out the gunbroker route though?

Try to buy from reliable sellers, they often call out things like lock-up and timing:

Firearms Land
The Attic
LSB (Lock, Stock, and Barrel)
Mt McCoy
Camarillo Traders

There are many others

The Smith L-frames are the heavy duty all around answer. This 586 no dash is my favorite and shoots like a dream.
