PC 30312 (d) A violation of this section is a misdemeanor.

That said IANAL but in some cases misdemeanor firearms related violations have led to long term firearm ownership issues that I have heard.

What kind of “friend” would call the police and report you after you sold a box of ammo to them? What kind of cop would arrest someone for selling ammo to a friend?

I guess it’s time to remind people of the 9th rule of Fight Club once again . . .

What is the penalty here for selling a box of ammo to a friend? If you give a friend a box of ammo out of state and it was bought here can you bring it back into California? Can he bring it back? Can you be charged with giving it to him outside of California?

Felony? Loss of rights? Life in prison? Deportation to another state? Has anyone been charged under these laws? Has anyone been convicted?

I am interested in how CADOJ knows that you sold a box of ammo to a friend in the first place? Did you guys not practice proper OPSEC? Taking a 10K Ft look at this scenario, I suspect NOTHING will happen because no one is looking for it. Sure, you could get this charge added to some other BS you may have gotten yourself caught up in, but I can't imagine you casually handing your buddy a box of 9MM at the range, or in your home, and suddenly a tactical team pops out from behind or porta potty or out of your hamper and screams "Freeze, in the name of Bonta". Not that I am going to tell anyone to "break" a law, but I certainly am not the person to admonish you for going 75 in a 65. So, I guess my advice would be "let your conscience be your guide." I for one follow all California gun laws and do so with the full faith and fealty in our overlords.

I am seeing ads for bulk ammo and wonder:
1 - Do some people just blindly trust a stranger for a private sale (without going through an FFL)?
2 - Is it possible that law enforcement post a private listing for ammo to set traps?
Anything like this ever happened in CA?

Save yourself a lot of heartache and get an FFL03/COE. It’ll cost you $130 and you’ll save that much on your first ammo shipment. Plus you can buy 60s era Wingmasters in shady Walmart parking lots and its all perfectly legal.

Jumping through hoops to avoid current hoops doesn’t save much heartache though

We’re being conditioned to be ok with FFL03/COE to do ammo purchases when everywhere else in the country is much simpler.

It’s more than just hoops, though. The pricing online is substantially better. Also, yes, it’s unfair and we should vote to make it more fair. But hey, so much in this life is pay to play and that sucks, but $130 for 3 years is cheaper than Amazon Prime and you can hold shipments at the UPS store. I like griping as much as the next guy but I’m doing it as I’m loading up the trunk.

There was a post on Reddit about a Senate staffer getting caught with drugs and ammo on them on their way into the Capitol and someone said

The ammo seems like a legitimate mistake. That happens all the time at TSA. Someone uses their travel bag to go to the range.

And someone else replied to them saying

If you can't account for every round you own, or worse, every firearm you own any any moment, you should not be allowed to own a firearm.

Like...I know the general location of all my ammo but I've definitely opened bags I thought were empty that had a few hundred rounds of 22 in them. Hell I rearranged my ammo cans a few weeks ago and I had 600 rounds of 124 gr 9mm I forgot about.

Does it sound to you like transferring ammo is something that the California law enforcement community is even remotely interested in?

What it looks like to me:

- This is California, where courts are harder with a speeder than all the folks who looted, burned and assaulted during covid and the Floyd riots.
- The state where university campuses are now incubators for foreign terrorist groups but non-violent people with a clean background check need a 10 day "cool-off" period to buy their 25th neutered pistol.

So when a private seller told me:
- FFLs laughed and turned him away last time, so no bother.
- and when I offered to find a willing FFL, he insisted he wouldn't bother going through with an FFL but was still okay meeting in person.
I thought it was odd and that it would be too easy for law enforcement agencies to be setting that up and trap people. (just a thought)

The most important was -What FFLs in North San Diego County are willing to do the private ammo transfers?-
Few people have been cool and one person pointed me to two FFLs in my area that do, which is what I needed.

That's really what's going on here.

Fully agree with the both of you.

Yes on one hand it's a good solution, on the other the FFL03/COE becomes the bandaid and the problem will only get worse with time.
Thank you for mentioning the option though!

When one political party holds a supermajority in a state’s government, they can trample both natural and constitutional rights as they pass any ridiculous laws that favored special interest groups want, regardless of whether or not they will really do anything at all to increase public safety. But laws are only meaningful if they are enforced, and sometimes the thing that is holding you back is all in your head.

I believe that threads like this, and the fear, uncertainty, and doubt they put into the minds of people, contribute to a certain level of conditioned helplessness amongst gun owners in this state. It reminds me of the Elephant Rope parable.



As someone said earlier, let your conscience be your guide. But there’s a reason people have told you that anytime they tried to transfer ammo through an FFL, the FFL laughed at them and told them that they don’t waste their time with private party ammo sales. Maybe you should take a cue from them and break the rope. Or just do what I do and shoot your ammo. The Democrats in California haven’t made that illegal yet.

It makes me think of the parable of the monkeys and the ladder.

We’re on the same page more than you might think.

My intention was not to put fear in people’s minds or entertain helplessness.
I created this thread to get info and have options, now I do.

Hopefully people who were wondering about the same thing got clarity too, not fear.
