Hi Guys!

Just curious if there is a desert land or open field near by the San Fernando Valley and Ventura area to shoot? I have been to a couple gun ranges recently and there are so many rules. I kinda being fed up with that! Thank you y’all!

No. Everything is roughly 2 hours away with no traffic. Just go to Angeles or Burro Canyon and save the gas which is expensive and time which is irreplaceable.

I’m in SFV. in my search for a range that I can holster draw and move around, I found 3 within about an hour-ish.

California Tactical Academy. I haven’t been to this one yet so I don’t know much about the layout. You can rent private bays online but they’re going thru some type of management change

A place to shoot, I’ve been here 2-3 times. They have a members only private bay. $250 every June.

Desert Marksman is a gun club with a range on it. I don’t know much about the layout either but they have a bay where ya can do the low speed high drag stuff. $150 a year I think.

Nearest BLM land is East of Fontana that I know of.
Is that an area you go out to? Fontana is pretty close to where I'm at and I'm trying to find a new spot to shoot since I got tired of driving to Hodge Road and all the people that don't pick up their trash

While they may be annoying and overbearing, if there were no rules stupid people would make it a life-threatening event to go to the gun range

I will definitely check these places out. I want to do some holster draw and move around while shooting. Thank you for your help!!

Well, you have to get out of all incorporated cities to be able to do that. And that leads to an old joke:
No. Everything is roughly 2 hours away with no traffic.
Traffic there is so bad that it takes an hour to get from LA to LA.

I don't know about LA. Here in the SF Bay Area, the nearest public land that allows shooting (BLM land either in the Sierra foothills or near Panoche) is about 2-1/2 to 3 hours from civilization.

Having been to BLM land, it is no fun at all. Why not? There are few spots that (a) allow shooting, (b) are legally reachable, (c) are relatively easy to get to (not a one-hour hike or half hour jeep trail), and (d) are closest to the highly populated areas. Those few spots are overcrowded. Most people who go there are reckless, leave the place covered in trash, shoot in all directions, and have no idea about safety. You get there, you park, and a few moments later you hear bullets whizzing by you and hit the ground. You look for a relatively safe place (with berms or canyon walls), while taking fire. I'm amazed there aren't more injuries. Honestly, organized ranges are much more fun.

If you really want to do shooting without rules, go buy a few dozen or hundred acres of wilderness. Or find friends who have done so and are willing to have visitors come shoot at their place. However, you can be sure that after a few visits by people who are "fed up" with following rules, those folks will cease to be your friends.

We live in an area where we can shoot in our back yard, and we do that somewhat regularly. We are exceedingly careful, we follow pretty much the same rules that an outdoor shooting range would, and we do not invite people, except those where we can be sure that they will be safe (for example with significant IPSC/USPSA experience), and then we go with them for supervision. We also try to limit the amount of shooting that gets done, because even with half a mile of distance (on several hundred acres of property) the noise pollution creates problems. As an example of noise pollution, we've pretty much stopped clay shooting with 12-gauges, they're just too loud.

It’s 2 hours if you haul ass 80 mph WHERE you can and WHEN you can. Only a madman does that kind of 💩 coming across HWY 138. You gotta go all the way around and above Edwards to be able to shoot. If you get off at Hodge Road and drive further into the desert away from all the f-wads off the 15 there, you will be fine as long as you have a backstop and a slightly higher clearance vehicle. 👌🏻

Rahaauge’s in Corona is another option. Get your own bay and do damn near whatever the hell you want there. I’ll say this and it can’t be stated enough. Stay the hell out of the ranges on the weekends. That’s when all the jerkoffs are there.

So I just found out about California Tactical Academy in Piru, CA. They let you rent a private range for $75/hour ( 4 people max). You can do your own stuffs. I might drive there sometimes soon. Its like 45mins.
