Any Other Weapon (AOW)s in 2026?

You are also a named plaintiff in the case if you are a member of the GOA. There is no requirement to specifically be a customer of silencershop to be a named plaintiff.
Nor is there any requirement to be a member of the GOA to be a named plaintiff.
You could buy anything from Silencershop and you are now a named plaintiff.

What if you're like me, someone who actually paid the $5 dollar AOW tax stamp before it became $0, got approved for a red AOW stamp on eForm 4 and is a GOA member? I imagine I am one of maybe a few at most here in California. What happens now?
I am of the personal understanding that there are no state level restrictions on making AOWs from pistols or purchasing them as long as you are in compliance with federal law and the handgun roster/AWB. Currently if you are a member of the GOA you are in compliance with federal law if you are not a prohibited person. Other than that there aren't any changes to your current legally owned AOWs, there wasn't a mandate to delete the NFRTR or anything.
Nor is there any requirement to be a member of the GOA to be a named plaintiff.

I would agree with you under a strict reading of the ruling but I don't know how well it would hold up in a CA court. GOA is $25 a year and explicitly protected in the ruling so I would recommend that over hoping a rocksett order counts.

As seen on le Reddit. Bolt out because it sat in the back of my safe while a pistol and I eventually had to pull it to scavenge the maglock for another build. Going to pick up an ARMaglock set from 2AZone on Monday or Wed, depending on how busy I am.

ANY order from silencershop makes you a customer and silencershop customers are explicitly protected in the order.
No strict reading is required.
If you ordered rocksett from silencershop and received it, you will have an emailed order confirmation and a paper shipping document as proof for life that you are a silencershop customer.

Update:

Submitted Form 1 today - 8/20.

Did my own pictures, did fingerprints via EFT (digital - cost $65 on printscan).

obviously no cost associated for NFA tax now.

I have seen posts above that they are approving form 1's again.

Will update once approved.

Good luck! Man you're so lucky you don't have to pay for the tax stamp anymore. 5 bucks, 200 bucks, it doesn't matter. A right delayed or hidden behind fees is a right denied.

Just keep in mind under 29186 you might need to go out of state to assemble it in AOW configuration

It gets complicated with the ones that can convert to rifles. IIRC, once converted to rifles, pistols can never go back to a pistol configuration. This is more towards the AR stuff. My AR pistol started out as AR pistol, was never a rifle. So for an AR pistol, if you throw on a rifle length barrel, legally you can't go back to a shorter one. That will create an SBR, and I think by CA is an AW; not certain about that part since I never intended to do any of that.

The AOW designation gives your pistol more legal protection once approved by the ATF. Of course I haven't made it that far yet since I am waiting. But the Echelon chassis, as is in that link, as long as it does NOT have any forward grip of any type, put a brace on and you're good to go. From my understanding, IF you want to add a forward grip, then it must be approved as an AOW first.

I watched Reno May's video on this, plus guidance from @WojtekWeaponry to get to this understanding, which I'm fairly certain is correct.

As always, someone correct me if any of this is wrong.
My understanding is that if it’s born and registered as a pistol in CA, you can put a rifle length upper on it and still preserve pistol status, as long as you do not install a rifle stock or VFG and keep mag locked? Not sure why anyone would WANT a 16”+ barrel on an AR pistol though.

Which part would be the violation though
(6) (g) and (k) are relevant for shotshell AOWs- the state thinks they're SBSes even though they aren't and they are unconventional pistols listed under 16590. AR AOWs don't meet the definition of an SBR in the state though so I don't think that 29186 applies to them.

Was just coming back to this thread after the injunction last night to see how it affected AOW's.

Wanting an AOW shotgun and curious how I could achieve this in CA.
Genesis 12 with 10.5” barrel. Mag locked and IIRC requires a brace. I have no idea how it’s going to feel like to shoot. I’m waiting now as I’m sure others are too.

I am trying to be as confusing as possible. The form 1 mentioned just above was not for smoothbore firearm from my original comment to start this thread, it was for a Zenith ZF5 pistol.

Noted about assembling AOW that takes shotshells though, thank you!

6G and K both reference PC 33215, which in turn references 17710:

17710. (a) The provisions listed in Section 16590 do not apply to “any other weapon” as defined in subsection (e) of Section 5845 of Title 26 of the United States Code, which is in the possession of a person permitted to possess the weapons under the federal Gun Control Act of 1968 (Public Law 90-618), as amended, and the regulations issued pursuant thereto.

So there shouldn't be anything in the way of AOWs as long as you are using Maglocked semiauto SSE2 pistols or detachable manual actions (still needs SSE2 for DROS). A lot of other people have made AOWs here for years without issue.

29186 (k) is the reason why the CADOJ hasn't allowed AOWs to be made in California recently. The law went into effect at the first of the year which is why people have been able to do it in the past but have had problems now.

CADOJ is of the opinion that since 29186 doesn't have the 17710(a) exemption listed as part of its law, and instead only says that weapons listed under 16590 are illegal to manufacture and 17710 (a) is not specifically a part of 16590 but instead part of the definitions under the individual penal codes that 16590 aggregates that means that 29186 is its own separate thing.

Its incredibly confusing and I agree with what you are saying but currently the CADOJ thinks otherwise. Its irrelevant imo for non-shotshell AOWs because an AOW is not by default a prohibited weapon, it only becomes prohibited if its a state SBR. Putting a vertical foregrip on a pistol does not meet the definition of a state SBR, so if they think they are one then it means the state thinks pistol braces make something an SBR. If they think pistol braces make something an SBR then there are probably a million unprosecuted SBRs in the state and maybe a couple thousand of those are legally considered AOWs.
