Any practical reason to have a .308/7.62 X 51?

Right and I’m not a professional sniper nor rich so no reason for me to drop my .308 guns and get that lol. Maybe one day when the institutional forces are there
That said, all it would take is a barrel change, it uses the same action and bolt face.

It's obsolete in the forces that are actually doing stuff, the infantry isn't even at war right now they are just sitting there so they don't even have a reason to upgrade. The 6.5 Creedmoor was designed to maximize bullet length in the short action cartridge so with 30 percent more recoil you bypass 308 velocity at 200 yards, at 500 yards it has 50 percent less drop, at 1000 yards 308 is subsonic and worthless but 6.5 creedmoor is competing with 300 win mag. The thing is there just isn't a reason to choose 308 unless you already have it because CM is cheaper, more available and better at everything. You will notice the difference even just target shooting at 500 it's a big difference especially in your wind calls.

That plus they’re pushing for 6.8 anyways.

I am all over a CMP M-14. I can’t believe they’re keeping them around $2k. Deal of the century if true.

I heard the limit is two per person to start. That would be cool.
I am really hoping to get one. it will be interesting to see how they'll offer them and if they will sell to CA.

I have an M1A, a Sig 716 patrol and a remington 700 all in 7.62x51. I like them all buten't shot the R700 since buying an R in 6.5 Creedmoor. The M1A I takt to about 500yda (irons) and the 716 and the R700 go to 750. I can't imagine shoot any of them indoors but then again, I hate indoor ranges. It really depends on what you want to do with it. You can build some good small frame AR's with 100+ grain bullets too.

I have a lot of .308
Same. And my 700 stacks em up nicely. AR-10's & M1A's are the business. I heard 5.56 just bounces off of people most of the time, so I had to play it safe and go 5 AR's bigger. AR's ratings are like wire gauge, the smaller they are the bigger the booms

I concur with the M1A. Sweet rifle. With iron sights, 300 yards no problem.

Skip the indoor ranges. Need to air these babies out long range.

You should have a long range rifle regardless whether it be .308, 7.62, 30-06 or what have you, lots to choose from, M1A, Mosin, REPR, Mini 14, SCAR, those are some of the models I own, way more on the market obviously, even something cheap like a Remington 783

A 308/7.62NATO rifle is probably the most practical firearm anyone could own. You can do pretty much anything you would need a rifle to do: big game hunting, defense, target shooting. If I could only have one rifle it would be either a 308 or 3006. I love the round so much I have several autoloaders and bolt guns chambered in it.

Since it sounds like OP only shoots at an indoor range, she should probably go with a 22lr. Even 223/556 is a waste of ammo at an indoor range.

OP might consider 300blackout. Great heavy hitting round for close distances. But optimized for suppressed short barreled rifles that we can't have in CA.

Of your several .308 rifles, if you could keep only one, which one would it be?

Love the .308 cartridge. I wouldn’t call it practical but it is fun to shoot. My advice would be to get an M1A. I really think you will like shooting it. It’s like back to the basics.

I have a Molot Vepr in .308 which is fantastic as well but that gun is super hard to find and expensive as hell now.

.308 ammo is readily avail albeit more expensive than 5.56 comparative obviously. Again…..I’d say do it.
