Reasonable compensation is the elimination of the unconstitutional “roster” and a refund of the excessive fees the state has charged to try to make firearms ownership prohibitively expensive. The DROS fee is theft and restricting what California FFLs can sell is a gross insult to our rights.

Effective $20/hr minimum wage and manditory health benefits have their consequences. It’s appealing to genetically deficient knuckle dragers but it raises the cost of everything. Some would call it “inflationary”.

I used Red Rifle in Carson a few months ago for a PPT and paid their $25 storage fee without complaint because I understand stores don’t make much on PPTs.

When I returned for another PPT involving a C&R firearm, I presented my FFL-03 and COE, so there was no 10-day wait and no storage involved. I was still charged the $25 “storage fee.” When I questioned it, I was simply told they don’t make money on PPTs, so they charge it anyway.

I understand wanting to offset the cost of PPTs, but calling it a storage fee when nothing is being stored is misleading.

You got officially double screwed there. Storage fees are not to be charged for the 10 day mandatory waiting period.

Also that C&R firearm you didn't even need to PPT, you already have FFL03+COE.
You could have given the seller cash in the parking lot, recorded their info in your logbook and been on your way. Then just pay the $18 fee in CFARS when you submit the form.
No FFL01, no DROS, and no "storage fee" needed. Unless it was a pistol then it still needs DROS.

This is great to know. I'm currently working with them on a PPT and they are very nice. They also have a lot of cool things in their shop.

The two are separate.
DROS is always $37.17 + $10/firearm

If you buy a gun online, or another dealer ships a firearm to your local FFL, California law does not cap what the receiving dealer may charge for handling that transfer. They are providing a service outside the PPT statutes, so they can generally set their own transfer fee (e.g. $75, $100, $150, etc.), provided they don't misrepresent it as a state fee.

IMO, it is important that LGS is compensated for their time, cost of building and licensure and insurance, etc. I want them to stay in business. Anyone who takes the initive to start a business, puts in the hours, capitol investment and accepts the risk deserves to be better compensated than someone who punches a timeclock in and out every day. The question is: what is a reasonable compensation?

No one is saying that a LGS should not make a profit, but in this case for PPT the law lays it out clearly that an FFL can only charge the DROs plus 10$ per firearm.

PPT is a condition on their FFL license. I know it's totally unfair, but they knew it, when they signed the form.

I’m did get a transfer done for the $10 one time. There is an FFL in riverside that does it, we PPT’d my wife’s ruger LC380 there. It took just a hair over 3.5 hrs. We saw other people pull up, brows the selection, make a purchace and leave many times before out number was called. But they did do the transfer for the $37.19 or whatever it was. That was about 6 years ago. I’ll pay the $100

I never paid a penny over the official fee and I never had anything correlating with your experience. Kitchen-table FFL, Ammo Bros, Turners, OC Guns, Rifle Supply, etc. It has never been more than an hour. Often the transaction was done within 15-30 minutes.

3.5 hours for a PPT should be criminal.

Even a 4 gun PPT with FFL03+COE exemption from the 3-in-30 rule only took me 30 minutes.
It's not rocket surgery they're doing, it's filling out basic forms.

There is no specification as to how long they take to get to you, just that they get to you.

Not having a specification isn't the point.
3.5 hours to fill out what is basically a couple PDFs is obviously excessive.
Single firearm PPT should not take more than 20 minutes even if you're chatting with the person at the same time.

If you're in a queue of customers before they got to you, that's a different story.
But based on what you wrote, it sounds like they took 3.5 hours to actively work on your PPT.

Yep, that's the maximum allowed they can charge which is the $37.17 + $10 per firearm.
Any FFL is not legally allowed to charge more than that.
