Question Anyone have experience with Oceanside Practical Pistol @ Iron Sights Range?

Before Covid, Iron Sights (Oceanside) used to have a monthly "action pistol" or steel plates match on a mid-week evening. Recently I was looking on their calendar and they don't seem to list the events anymore. I haven't called them though. On Target in Laguna Niguel used to do the same- but they stopped during Covid and don't plan on starting up again.
On Target has actually been doing monthly action pistol courses again for about a year. And every couple of months it’s a 3-gun. Its pretty fun and always good training under some simulated pressure.

Really? I asked 6-8 months ago and the guy at the desk said "No". I'll check with them later this week. Clearly it's like going to Turner's; I have to ask the right person to get the correct answer....

This is indoors?

Yes, indoors. Oddly the February action pistol isn’t listed on their calendar yet, might have to call.

Generally about 50-100 rounds of ammo needed, holster and 3 mags. Generally 4 courses of fire, always with speed reloads, some non-dominant hand, shoot while moving, etc.

That's awesome that On Target started their action pistol events again. I'm definitely going to ask about it next week when I go.

For competition, how does 10 round limited magazines work? Are we at a huge disadvantage compared to others who got their hands on mags during freedom week?

Hey CAGuns - I'm interested in trying some of the Fun Steel matches offered by OPP (Oceanside Practical Pistol) over in Oceanside.

Does anyone have experience with these matches? What did you think?

Would I be ok without gear, just to get the hang of things, or is a holster/gun belt/mag pouches mandatory?

Thanks!
It is okay. Kinda dangerous as lead can fly back at you. I had shards of lead nail me in the neck. The hazard is not worth the reward, for me.

For Steel Challenge matches, there's basically no disadvantage at all. There are 5 plates, so if you hit them (or even miss a few), 10 rounds is plenty for each string. Just bring 5 mags to use one for each string.

Wouldn't properly angled targets prevent spalling? Did you get injured at OPP specifically? How did they respond?

The targets were angled properly. The lead that impacted my neck left a light mark. It didn't penetrate my skin, fortunately. I didn't bring it to the range masters attention. My friend that invited me had a similar experience.

I'm not that experienced, but I think a lot of the fragments are usually from different lanes. I've been hit a few times by little bits but it's generally just a minor annoyance - but that's why it's important to wear eyepro the whole time!

Have you gone out and shot any matches yet?
Not yet! Still got my holster coming in the mail and then I have some private instruction lined up for holster draw fundamentals.

I'm going to try and attend the March 6th steel match for my first event.

It seems like you were interested in going too, what did you think?

Haven't gone to the Oceanside/Iron Sights match yet, but went and checked out the On Target Laguna Niguel match. Had a good time. They had mostly cardboard silhouettes with a couple steel poppers. All courses of fire were 10-round magazine friendly. I'll try out Oceanside next time.
