I’ve owned two ar pistols. One was a ppt and the other was SSE. Both never got shot and both were sold. I prefer a handgun or lightweight, 14.5” ar15.

Family, PPT, SSE, or roster exempt.

Thats the thing, I dont like to do grey area. I hate the feeling of not knowing if some overzealous bystander/off duty cop/range master decides to be a and snitch to the doj, again. So thats why I thought id ask here. At this point, I dont want anything that could be even questionable. I thought maybe there's some way to make ar pistols legal and its a common thing. Looks like its not and its more of a "how much "risk" are you willing to take", for me, not that much, so ill stay away untill it becomes a common thing to see everywhere

The risk is in the manufacturing, not in the posessing.
Buying one via PPT or obtaining one through Intra-familiar transfer is the way to have one without any risk.

So the 100% safest bet is to legally acquire a lower DROSED as a semi automatic pistol either through one of the roster exemptions. Then it can be built as a semi automatic, mag locked, AR pistol?

It’s completely legal to go SSE to Semi. People love splitting hairs with alternative interpretations of the law but the letter of the law says what it says, and it says nothing about SSE to Semi being illegal.

SSE to Semi without a maglock? That’s a dangerous handgun in CA. But so is anything with 11+ magazines, or a mag disconnect removed, etc.

Yep, one time I bought a off roster SSE and when I went to pick it up from the FFL they had me take it out to the parking lot and then come back into the store at which point they took the off roster SSE to the back room 2 minutes later came back with an off roster semi-auto. When my CCW came up for a renewal I added it with no problems.

Any AR pistol is going to get some looks but really only a LEO would be the one to give you any about it.

A semi-auto AR pistol without a maglock is an assault weapon.
Legally registered assault weapons can use 11+ round magazines and have all the features of an assault weapon.

You did not say anything about legal semantics before but every time you say something, you use different words.
Maybe stick to using the same words and make sure they are indeed the correct ones to use going forward?

It's not currently possible to register assault weapons, but ones that are already registered are exempt of the current laws.

After de-registration, they are no longer exempt of the features ban.
