Any advice, info, input, or recommendations on the differences, advantages, compatibilities, etc. between the AR10 vs LR308 (DPMS) vs SR25 platforms? To those that may not know, the 7.62x51(308) cartridge version of the AR15 is not as standardized or uniform.

Although I'm not currently in the market to get one yet, I figured this thread could be a Caguns community repository on the topic for future inquiries.

The rear portion of AR10 and SR25 receivers are angled whereas the LR308 has a radius (below). The physical receiver incompatibilities immediately separate the three platforms into two distinct groups: angled vs radius. A side bit of history and context, both the AR10 and SR25 were designed by the legendary Sénior Eugene Stoner. As of 2026, the LR308 seems to be the most abundant and popular due to the lack of proprietary components compared to the others.

The AR-10 and LR-308 share these components (source):
  • Upper Receiver
    • Forward Assist Assembly
    • Ejection Port Dust Cover
    • Gas Tube Roll Pin
    • Charging Handle
    • Gas Block
    • Barrel (w/ out extension)
  • Lower Receiver
    • Safety Selector Lever
    • Safety Spring & Detent
    • Trigger & spring
    • Hammer & spring
    • Disconnector & spring
    • Bolt Catch (roll pin incompatible)
    • Bolt Catch Spring & Plunger
    • Magazine Release Button
    • Pistol Grip, Screw & Washer
    • Takedown Spring and Detent
    • Pivot Spring and Detent
    • Trigger Guard & Pins
    • Buffer Retainer
    • Receiver End Plate
    • Castle Nut
These AR-10 and LR-308 parts are not compatible:
  • Upper Receiver
  • Lower Receiver
  • Buffer Tube (Receiver Extension)
  • Buffer & Recoil Spring
  • Handguard/Rail
  • Barrel Extension
  • Barrel Nut
  • Gas Tube
  • Bolt Carrier Group
  • Magazine Catch
  • Bolt Catch Roll Pin
Although there are small physical and aesthetic differences, is one platform inherently more accurate? If so, please explain.

Thank you

Functionally they are the same. DI AR platforms. Accuracy issues are entirely function of tolerances and barrels etc. mechanically these are the same platform.

Outliers. Guns like the Ruger SFAR. Which basically takes the same platform mechanically and then shrunk some down where they could to make the thing lighter and closer size wise to a AR15.

Piston guns that use the manual of arms of these guns but of course a different mechanical system. Generally a bit heavier. Probably generally not as accurate. I prefer piston cause i hate cleaning DI and well, i cant shoot well enough for the inherent accuracy differences to matter.

Although there are small physical and aesthetic differences
Even among DPMS/LR308 mfr there can be enough differences between upper/lower receiver match-up that the best suggestion is to stick with one mfr for both.

As for accuracy, when I was researching the choice between AR10/LR308 I don't think there was enough proof that one was inherently more accurate. It still boils down to the common factors in semi-auto accuracy; Barrel the most important, ammo choice, followed by lesser influences such as gas system or barrel/upper fit.
