Are armor piercing RIFLE rounds legal in California?

My understanding is that armor piercing rifle rounds are legal to buy/sell/possess in Calif, while handgun rounds are not. Is that in fact correct?

I realize that there are pitfalls in asking legal questions in an Internet forum, but everything I've read indicates that there's nothing illegal about the rifle rounds.

Yes, that's correct. PC 30315 only applies to handgun ammunition.

These statutes are tied to the cartridge, not the firearm. A 9mm cartridge used in a rifle cannot be armor-piercing. A 5.56 used in a "pistol" (lol) can be armor-piercing. If you have the ammunition itself, that's illegal, whether or not you actually have the matching gun.

It makes sense that it's tied to the cartridge. So 30 Caliber M2 armor-piercing would be legal since it's not chambered, as far as I know, as a pistol round?

A couple of additional questions:
1) From what I can gather one doesn't need to be a 'licensed ammunition vendor' when selling less than 500 rounds in a single month. So it's possible to conduct a private person-to-person sale, correct?

2) Assuming that (1) is accurate does the buyer of the ammo need to undergo a Basic/Standard Eligibility Check? If so, how is that conducted in a private sale?

I don't think anyone would claim that a .30 cal M2 AP round is a handgun round...lol.

1. Not accurate. PC 30312 requires all ammunition sales to be processed through a licensed ammunition vendor except for certain exemptions, such as immediate family or spouse. When neither party is licensed, the ammunition must be delivered to a vendor for processing.

2. There is no private sale exemption. The vendor license is required if you sell 500 or more rounds in a month.

Yeah, I don't think anyone knowledgeable about firearms would claim that M2 is a pistol round. On the other hand too many people get all their gun knowledge from movies and tv

I guess that I will have to sell my rounds using a vendor as a middleman, unless the buyer is licensed. I also found 10 20 round Lake City 30 caliber M2 ball ammo packages, unopened and looking good as new. The other cartridges are from St. Louis Ordnance Plant still opened as well.

I'll post them in the sales thread once I have some time and figure out pricing for them.
