I do not actually consider myself a gun guy and here is why. While I love guns and enjoy shooting them It's not really a passion for me the same as cars. I don't care about the trigger pull or sights and other things that most will modify if they don't like the factory setup. When I buy a gun I just enjoy it for what it is. I don't think I have ever owned more than 3 or 4 at anytime. How about some of you ?

For me it's just another hobby along with cars, bourbon, camping etc. But firearms also provide the ability to defend myself and my family which is why most of my guns and training are for carry or home defense purposes. As a result, I do not modify internal parts like triggers or polishing surfaces or anything like that. I just find a gun that is solid enough from the factory and run it.

I’m crazy about guns but I’m not a gun nut. I actually know the specifics about my firearms….

The general public however doesn’t see it this way so ymmw

Hey you have some great hobbies ! I think maybe if I lived in a state like Texas or Tennessee that was more 2A friendly I probably would have become more of a actual gun guy. Here in CA they hate guns and gun owners and it sucks.

I grew up shooting (Boy Scouts) in a family that hates guns and is hardcore anti-2A.

The average Californian lives in the big metros and their only experience with firearms is what they see on the news. Unfortunately there’s too many Californians concentrated on these metro regions. It’s pretty interesting to see the rural/urban divide and how it plays a difference in not only politics, but firearms as well.

I own quite a few guns, including backups. Four Glock 34s, two G26s, two G19s, two G21SFs, and two AR-15s with identical builds, among others (HKs, CZs, Walthers, etc). But I wouldn't consider myself a gun nut or a fanatic.

I don't care about gun magazines, the latest gadgets, or whatever gimmick is being hyped this month. I don't follow GunTubers either. Frankly, most of them suck. I don't go crazy with modifications and prefer keeping my guns as close to stock as possible, especially the triggers.

And I don't buy guns just for the sake of buying or collecting. If I'm spending money on another gun, it better offer some actual performance benefit or capability I don't already have.

I also have little patience for FUDD nonsense, like those ridiculous handgun diagnostic charts, or endless debates over grip angles, which defensive 9mm round is supposedly the best, and other trivial crap people obsess over instead of actually shooting.

For me, it's pretty simple. I'm interested in performance, proficiency, and capability, whether in competition or defensive shooting.

I own a motorcycle. It's a Harley, I'm not a biker.

I own firearms. Along with thousands of rounds for them. I'm not gun guy.

(See sig line.)

Let something negative happen at a bike rally they will call you a biker lol. If you own more than 10 guns you might be considered a gun guy IMO but that's ok

By California standards, yes. By gun guy standards, no. Philosophically it occupies a similar space for me as physical fitness, certain genres of reading, or cooking. They are skills that I enjoy practicing and learning about, but are not identities or ends unto themselves. They primarily serve a function and an obligation. In the case of guns, to be capable of defending myself, my family, and my community.

I feel ya on the California standards lol

I always thought guns were cool due to growing up with video games and modern media but I never really got that deep into it until this year. There’s a lot more technology and stuff to nerd out on. When I was in the military I liked to shoot but I didn’t really care Much beyond just shooting the gun. I always end up nerding out on a hobby whether it’s PC’s, guns, moto, etc.

I didn’t really shoot much as a teenager or anything like that despite my dad owning guns and being a former scout sniper, he didn’t really shoot much for pleasure. I got a marlin model 60 when I was 18.

Hasn’t been as big of a part of my life as motorcycle racing though at all. USPSA competition looks interesting but I don’t think it is as built up of a sport so I don’t think it could ever have the same fulfillment

@Gawernator the two do not need to be mutually exclusive. ..

The other day one of my co-workers asked me, “How many guns do you have?”

I replied, “What…on me right now?”

He looked perplexed. “Ummm no, I mean total.”

I thought about it for a second and said, “Huh…I don’t know. I should count them.”

He looked uncomfortable. Whatever.

That's whats weird about a lot of people who do not own firearms.. If you even mention guns to some of them they look at you as a gun nut.
No kidding!

No one looks at you weird if you own several classic cars, and are a 'car guy' or 'gearhead', or if you like to go fishing, or scuba diving, but if you own more than a single gun, and sometimes just that one, you're into weird scary stuff.

And god help me if I buy a thousand rounds, I have an arsenal. One that will last me 60 days at best, just going to the range.

Yeah, you know what's really funny? There's a Colion Noir video that's really funny and it's titled reasons you shouldn't get into guns or something like that and one of the lines and scenes in the video Colion goes "Buy more than ten guns? Now they're hosting interventions and talking about how you stockpiling weapons of mass destruction is scaring everyone." Lol and he talks about how people stare at you weird too or something. But yeah no, it's funny when people ask me how many guns I have and I just tell them enough or if I really know they're another gun guy/gal I'll tell them the exact amount. But I almost never tell anyone how many I have because if I do it's kinda like a test to see what kind of person I'm talking to and I'm okay with that lol.

As for if I consider myself a gun guy, I was in the Marine Corps and I was familiar and proficient with most of our small arms and a few of our crew served weapons systems and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them and wished I had more time with those platforms. As for before my time in the Corps, my Uncles taught me how to shoot, how to hunt, gun safety and etiquette, everything. But my Uncles lived outside of Los Angeles and the rest of my family besides my Uncles' families are very liberal but I never could be like the rest of my family despite spending more time with my mother and grandparents than my uncles. My heart always was with where they lived and what they did and so I didn't end up being liberal, I became very conservative and gun friendly at an early age. But I didn't own my first firearm until I was in my early 20s. I absolutely love firearms, I love figuring out how they work, I love the history of firearms and gunpowder and other weapons used in warfare, I love all of it. I do consider myself a gun guy but I don't make it my entire personality. If people ask me, of course I get all giddy and enthusiastic but by no means do I advertise it on my truck or what I wear for the most part. I really do want to work in some shape or form in the firearms industry and I've been trying to get a job in a gun store or a range or something so I can get another part time job in addition to where I currently work but that's still a work in progress and I don't know if it'll ever happen to be honest. But yeah, if you point out a gun on a wall, seven to eight times out of ten I'll be able to identify the firearm and tell you its history or what conflicts it was used in (if any) or the barrel length or what it's use is for, that kind of thing. I love to take my friends to the range whenever I can and I've even managed to get a couple of previously anti gun and pro gun control individuals who are great friends of mine by the way to the range and showed them how to shoot and gun safety and everything and they LOVED it! It's funny, those friends are the complete opposite of how I met them and we go to the range all the time now and they vote almost completely differently when it comes to firearms and gun control. But I'll never try to change your mind or force you to adopt a more friendly disposition towards firearms, I just show them what I love about our hobby and how to be safe and efficient. I respect anyone who disagrees with me and that's okay, not everyone is gonna agree with me and I respect that completely. That's one of the great things about our country that I still believe in, we can agree to disagree and still be friends but there's always gonna be people out there who don't follow that in life and that's on them.

Anyways not to get sidetracked and sorry for the long paragraph but yeah, I do consider myself a gun guy. But I don't have any tattoos or look like one lol.
