Are you a gun guy or lady ?

The other day one of my co-workers asked me, “How many guns do you have?”

I replied, “What…on me right now?”

He looked perplexed. “Ummm no, I mean total.”

I thought about it for a second and said, “Huh…I don’t know. I should count them.”

He looked uncomfortable. Whatever.
"Like... in total? Or just the ones with bodies on them?"

Interesting question. I don’t consider myself a ‘gun guy’ but I do enjoy the hobby.

I’ve been around guns my entire life, though never considered CCW until I was active LE. Now, 30 years later, I can’t imagine not having a gun on me, haha!!

I leaned into collecting after inheriting my first collection from my dad. I sure wish I had the collecting instinct when I was acitve LE, haha!! “Why buy semi-auto assault weapons when I get paid to shoot select-fire?” Doh!! Haha!! At least I’ve got a bunch of ‘Govt/LE Only’ marked 92, AR, and MP-5 mags from the Federal AWB era, haha!!

I also like biking (road and mountain), running, swimming, gardening, and I’m getting into the farm life, researching electric tractors, UTVs, etc and finding county and federal grants to help buy them.

I will say I *truly* envy the person who’s REALLY into ONE THING and they spend their free time just getting better and better at that ONE THING: piano player, violin, IDPA shooting, clays, trap, golf, cabinet making, painting, etc.

Oh how I wish I could just pick one thing and be done with everything else. I like so many things that I have no focus. A ‘jack of all trades and master of none’ for sure, haha!!

Tl;dr - Like guns but don’t consider myself a gun guy.

Yeah, you know what's really funny? There's a Colion Noir video that's really funny and it's titled reasons you shouldn't get into guns or something like that and one of the lines and scenes in the video Colion goes "Buy more than ten guns? Now they're hosting interventions and talking about how you stockpiling weapons of mass destruction is scaring everyone." Lol and he talks about how people stare at you weird too or something. But yeah no, it's funny when people ask me how many guns I have and I just tell them enough or if I really know they're another gun guy/gal I'll tell them the exact amount. But I almost never tell anyone how many I have because if I do it's kinda like a test to see what kind of person I'm talking to and I'm okay with that lol.

As for if I consider myself a gun guy, I was in the Marine Corps and I was familiar and proficient with most of our small arms and a few of our crew served weapons systems and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them and wished I had more time with those platforms. As for before my time in the Corps, my Uncles taught me how to shoot, how to hunt, gun safety and etiquette, everything. But my Uncles lived outside of Los Angeles and the rest of my family besides my Uncles' families are very liberal but I never could be like the rest of my family despite spending more time with my mother and grandparents than my uncles. My heart always was with where they lived and what they did and so I didn't end up being liberal, I became very conservative and gun friendly at an early age. But I didn't own my first firearm until I was in my early 20s. I absolutely love firearms, I love figuring out how they work, I love the history of firearms and gunpowder and other weapons used in warfare, I love all of it. I do consider myself a gun guy but I don't make it my entire personality. If people ask me, of course I get all giddy and enthusiastic but by no means do I advertise it on my truck or what I wear for the most part. I really do want to work in some shape or form in the firearms industry and I've been trying to get a job in a gun store or a range or something so I can get another part time job in addition to where I currently work but that's still a work in progress and I don't know if it'll ever happen to be honest. But yeah, if you point out a gun on a wall, seven to eight times out of ten I'll be able to identify the firearm and tell you its history or what conflicts it was used in (if any) or the barrel length or what it's use is for, that kind of thing. I love to take my friends to the range whenever I can and I've even managed to get a couple of previously anti gun and pro gun control individuals who are great friends of mine by the way to the range and showed them how to shoot and gun safety and everything and they LOVED it! It's funny, those friends are the complete opposite of how I met them and we go to the range all the time now and they vote almost completely differently when it comes to firearms and gun control. But I'll never try to change your mind or force you to adopt a more friendly disposition towards firearms, I just show them what I love about our hobby and how to be safe and efficient. I respect anyone who disagrees with me and that's okay, not everyone is gonna agree with me and I respect that completely. That's one of the great things about our country that I still believe in, we can agree to disagree and still be friends but there's always gonna be people out there who don't follow that in life and that's on them.

Anyways not to get sidetracked and sorry for the long paragraph but yeah, I do consider myself a gun guy. But I don't have any tattoos or look like one lol.
That's a great outlook on things and even though I don't consider mysely a gun guy I love the American history of many guns especially the Colt single action army and Winchester lever action rifles and my new favorite 1911's

I'm afraid I have to go ahead and call you a gun guy by default lol

I do not actually consider myself a gun guy and here is why. While I love guns and enjoy shooting them It's not really a passion for me the same as cars. I don't care about the trigger pull or sights and other things that most will modify if they don't like the factory setup. When I buy a gun I just enjoy it for what it is. I don't think I have ever owned more than 3 or 4 at anytime. How about some of you ?
I guess I could be considered a gun guy; but sometimes I think I’m more like a lady about it. Sometimes I do care about or question how the outfit looks or feels; such as optic and/or light choice. I feel the need to ask other gun guys about how they think it looks or how it would look, compared to others; if it looks ugly, out of place, or not. It’s so exhausting sometimes trying to decide which optic, light, or accessory to put on the gun.

Wait, so how are you guys differentiating between liking guns, interested in guns, gun guy, or gun nut?

I consider myself a connoisseur of handguns. I buy handguns that I find interesting; it’s why my collection includes everything from esoteria like a French-made Walther P4 to a far more common (but still rare within the Glock world) G32.

I don’t call myself a gun guy but it is my biggest hobby and has been since I was a kid. I started around 6 and never stopped, i’ve slowed down during certain periods of my life but never stopped, never will, still enjoy the 💩 out of it. Other hobbies are 🍆ing with tech and cars. Used to ride motorcycles and bicycles but arthritis took those past times away.

I avoided guns after I retired because it was just too cliche... But now, I've embraced Marine Vet Gun Guy...I like to tinker with everything, tho... Guns are no different. I love to shoot and work on my guns.

Wait, so how are you guys differentiating between liking guns, interested in guns, gun guy, or gun nut?
At the risk of sounding like a facebook personality test, I would categorize them something like this:
Liking guns: own between zero and a handful, enjoys occasionally talking about and shooting guns
Interested in guns: own between a handful and a lot, shoot fairly regularly, reasonably knowledgeable about at least one category of firearm.
Gun guy: own a lot, shoot a lot, wear gun merch often, a majority of personal and social time revolves around guns.
Gun nut: lost all 300 of his guns in a boating accident, yet has multiple stationed in every room and in a chest buried in the garden, regularly fantasizes about a breakdown in rule of law, has watched the original Red Dawn at least twice.

I know a few who the line is blurred betwen guy and nut lol

No kidding!

No one looks at you weird if you own several classic cars, and are a 'car guy' or 'gearhead', or if you like to go fishing, or scuba diving, but if you own more than a single gun, and sometimes just that one, you're into weird scary stuff.

And god help me if I buy a thousand rounds, I have an arsenal. One that will last me 60 days at best, just going to the range.
when I was 18ish I noticed this a lot living in the Bay Area but feel it's not as weird in normal culture nowadays especially with my age group. Now at 33 I know if someone is a wimp or not depending on their reaction to gun usage lol so it's a useful tell. It's also sadly a political identifier pretty much too. Gun owner = "evil MAGA" to a lot of NPC's for some reason

I mean… I don’t wear or have any gun clothing. I have watched Red Dawn so so many times. The new one is ass.

You are the moderator of a statewide gun forum. You are beyond average gun guy

There's been only 3 things in my life, that can be considered hobbies and interests, that I've really fully invested time and money into. Art, music (specifically metal), and the most recent, guns. Do I consider myself to be a "guy" for any of that? Not really. But from the outside viewing me, being so invested in these hobbies, yea probably. Don't care about the labels tbh. We're all here with one thing in common that much is obvious.
