Bizarre Issue; PPT Guns Covered in Cologne! Researching Ideas to Fix.

They are pretty common in gun shops I frequent. I also bought a couple for home use. The ones I've seen in gun shops will fit a rifle. My home gamer versiones will fit a disassembled semi-auto pistol, frame, barrel ,and slide. Worst case, could do the parts separately, or flip over and run again (if taller than the water line).

UV radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation with enough energy to break down the delicate chemical compounds and fragrance molecules that make up perfumes. UV radiation can also accelerate oxidation, a process where perfume ingredients react with oxygen in the air, further altering their chemical composition and scent (I did not write this paragraph).

Thanks man! I brought up UV light when someone mentioned sunlight, but I wasn't even thinking about a UV lamp. Great suggestion because a lot of these PPT items will probably be slathered in someone's cologne, at least as I perceive it.

Sure thing! I hope it helps, if you buy it from Amazon and don't like it, just return it. It can also kill off a lot of the nasty "stuff" previous owners have left behind. People are basically slobs, IMHO.

Awesome, and good to know! I'm going to look into this too along with UV lamps. A gun slathered in someone else's cologne doesn't feel like mine!

The ultrasonic cleaning, does this involve immersing gun parts in water? This doesn't hurt the gun parts I presume?

Update! It turns out that there are gun-specific ultrasonic cleaners at Amazon! Hornady makes one. This combined with UV light afterward should be great. Will try it and report back.

Good old fashion Hoppe's No. 9 should get rid of the stank. Butch's Bore Shine is also pretty pungent.

Update! It turns out that there are gun-specific ultrasonic cleaners at Amazon! Hornady makes one. This combined with UV light afterward should be great. Will try it and report back.

Keep in mind that if your weapon has a coating other than bluing and if that coating hasn't been applied perfectly, an ultrasonic cleaner has the possibility of dislodging some of that coating. It's also super important to be very aware of the cleaning solution you are using. I really like water with a couple of drops of Dawn in it. As I recall, I turned an aluminum lawn mower carburetor into a paperweight once by using Simple Green (I think) and water. Turns out it is corrosive to aluminum and the Ultrasonic Cleaner accelerated the oxidation process exponentially. I love my ultrasonic cleaner but, you can really screw the pooch with them if you aren't careful.

Any method of neutralizing cologne on objects (gun parts especially) will be helpful in the future as long as I'm buying PPT guns, because I can't make the world stop wearing cologne and there's no accounting for taste when it comes to quantity.

Even my dang InstaCart orders have occasionally been swimming in a sea of gawd-awful stank that someone might describe as 'perfume'. Yes, I did complain. Wearing cologne in any kind of food service is a turnip-level IQ move.

To that end, I've ordered an ultrasonic cleaner, some Simple Green HD solution, and a small UV light.

Which Simple Green did you use? I was going to buy some Simple Green HD, the purple stuff. I may start with a milder solution as you've recommended. Did you use tap water or distilled? It seems distilled would be the way to go.

I can try the rubbing alcohol now, and I have a UV light arriving tomorrow. Will try it. Is Hoppe's No. 9 okay for a gun's exterior? I know it's meant to be a bore cleaner.

Just a thorough interior cleaning with Hoppe's might do the trick, it might overtake the cologne smell .I usually use rubbing alcohol to clean up after a range trip, has had no ill effect on any gun finishes. Then use Hoppe's on the barrel and inside of slide. After oiling I wipe everything down with a microfiber towel, has worked great for me for several decades now.

Which Hoppe's product are you referring to, the odorous bore-cleaner or milder oil? Is Hoppe's bore cleaner safe for gun finishes?
