Just tried to reply to a thread over there. It just sat there, so not working well. I just exited out, don't know if my post made it.

I could simply say that I have used Postman for over a decade tracing endpoints in php stacks that somehow became my problem.

It wont help them, bc whoever was working on CG should have been able to unF their issues layer by layer manually by now.

I need to mention this to a few people i know teaching lower division CS classes. Give the students a mandatory taste of debugging a deployment they had nothing to do with. Basic CRUD app debug. Kinda like tracing thru steps when someone screws up a brake bleed or pad job in autoshop. Critical thinking test.

Well, not to be critical, but as a metric.... I was able to get onto CalGuns for a short time.

There were 3-4 new posts with 10/25 dates in the long guns classifieds vs. 3 PAGES of posts a day when it worked reliably, and about a page or less per 24 hours more recently.

Handguns there were FIVE posts on 10/25, vs. 6 pages when it mostly worked, and around 2 pages of late...

In short, it's getting closer to DEAD DEAD (much of the time over the last couple months) than "mostly dead"

Appreciate the update, and also understand the time constraints, as well as the stress and trauma of being a "caregiver" to an ailing computer, but every day that goes by without the site functioning devalues whatever value is left at this point. I'm sure my tech knowledge is out of date to current, but I've helped desperate sys admins (at companies you'd recognize the names of in ecom and finance) fix "mission critical" failures where time meant $$$$$, remotely by phone... in real time... while their coders typed the patches... so I'm more than a little baffled by how a vital resource to the CA 2A community (as well as the countrywide 2A cause) can go wasting for MONTHS!?

Time is money/value. CalGuns is of HUGE value to the 2A community, but the clock is rapidly ticking down. Please consider that even jerry rigging things together on a temporary, CLEAN server/software/database config that WORKS should be an option while the main server/software/database is sorted out. If CalGuns were a typical commercial enterprise, it would be toast over this level of failure.

Also, props to CAGUNS for being here to keep the flag flying and the flame burning!

I was finally able to log on for the first time in maybe a week. 5 am on a Sunday. Looked basically the same as the last time I was there. I was able to update (close) the last of my classifieds and cruise around without too much trouble. As someone else reported the classifieds were pretty dead. A few new listings but mostly the same stuff I’ve been seeing for the last few months. It’s gotten so stale I’m starting to recognize usernames of folks who are selling the things I’m interested in. The front page had the same couple of threads complaining about the site being slow. The new posts I saw were mostly older folks shouting into the wind about how that new site would never be as good as calguns was back in the day and generally being negative.
The thing that hit me was the user count. 5323 online and 56 members.
I was thinking it would be funny to change my user name here to “Dbrewbrew” just to immortalize the last calguns member. Or make a meme out of it…

The big number to look at is the active users. It’s 7400 where it was 7600 the last time I posted that. The number is dropping pretty aggressively.

I agree. It’s tough to watch. I started on there in ‘09, lost my login in the early teens and started over. I don’t think a week has gone by without me at least scanning the classifieds in that time.

Also suggest maintaining code for which the source has been lost, and changes are made by patching a binary. Actually watched that on a GM (Lansing, Oldsmobile?) AS/400 back in the 80s.

I need to go in after midterms are over. I know someone teaching cybersecurity at the undergrad level.

A bunch f us have been trying to make the point that Sec wasn't a workflow we walked into. Many of us came to addition os Sec to our existing experience as a result of internal and external factors.

Archaeology mindset I have found useful in giving students perspective. Dev and Data tend to find benefit as well as a reduction in imposter syndrome.

Reducing a binary right/wrong is slowly replaced by a viewpoint of what we had/experienced at a given time. I tend to emphasize that mindset as something that will keep someone interested and engaged in their work. There is a fluency that needs to be employed when updating a legacy unsupported whatever that is added with an idea of history.

I had a friend working for GM designing engine cases. He rode a Unigraphics workstation for GM for like 20 years. He teaches CAD and mechanical design now. He has a particular emphasis on testing and lessons learned from warranty work. Clearing, and metallurgy according to the book he emphasizes as not enough.

I fully agree that CalGuns is/was a HUGE good thing for firearms/2A folks, and I was a happy user of the site for many years, but it is still largely unusable at this time... I also realize that CaGuns is new and will take awhile to build-up, but at least it works...

I was on CG yesterday around 10:30 pm and it was working well. Went through around 20 pages of topics catching up after months of absence. Then it began to dog down. Later,just now it was working well but developed some slowing .

It was nice to get back on.

I’d hope the Admins keep it open. It’s like the death bellows of some great monster going down. When it is finally, and irrevocably 100% gone, maybe close it, but the speculation regarding the demise of the site, the problems of the ownership story, and all the disgruntled payees provides an occasional chuckle.
Does anyone know (if at all possible) if the Janitor has signed up here yet?

Search by member and type the first three letters of the janitor's name. One member has a similarly spelled name.
