Does AOR cover civil liabilities? Because it's likely that you will get sued by the family, even if it's a good shoot.
That's a big reason I went with ccw safe

Look into a personal liability plan through your auto/home insurance. Make sure a self defense shooting is not exempt from coverage as well.

I have had USCCA for some time and did some training with them until I found out that they stiff some people. I got the base coverage now. I pay $43 for both me and my spouse.

Then I got CCW safe and haven’t had any issues since I haven’t needed to use them. I pay $67 for both me and my spouse.

Now I’m thinking of completely dropping USCCA and going over to AOR (attorneys on retainer).

It looks like it has a set up cost of $75 per family member (I would automatically go with the family plan because of my spouse) and then $25 per person, per month.

so it would have an initial cost of $150 and then $50 per month for me and my spouse. I don’t know if that includes the pay out limits I want and what not.

I went to a class recently where the range had advertisements for a company called "Right to Bear" https://protectwithbear.com/pages/plans
Their motto seems similar to AOR. I didn't hear anyone bring up RTB company, just curious if it's too new for people to know about, or if there might be other reasons why AOR would still be preferred over RTB.

Imho, i think ccw insurance is not worth. There are stories of them not covering when it doesnt fit their guidelines. In the end of the day, they are an insurance company, they will try not to pay. Ive also heard that client privacy privileges are iffy with USCCA since their lawyers have to report to the company, and the company isnt subjected to the privacy laws or wtvr. Could be wrong but its what i read.

But to answer your question: AOR: attorneys on retainer. They seem to literally cover everything even if you were accidentally committing or somehow charged with a felony.

Other people say CCW Safe is good, i think AOR is better because you are essentially paying for your own lawyer. (Correct me if im wrong)

The other option is saving up your own money instead of paying insurance to pay for a lawyer (if you have the luxury).

Second this. I quit USCCA for AOR. I don't like the idea of and insurance adjuster deciding if my case is worthy or not. USCCA wouldn't give me a straight answer regarding self defense incidents in defenseless victim zones (aka gun free zones) and whether they would be covered or not.

I found a lawyer named Andrew Branca through various GunTubes. He recommended CCW Safe a while back, but I don't know if he still does.

I read his book, "Law of Self-Defense Principles," which was very good. I liked how he discussed the use of force, when to use it, and when to walk away.

His website offers a "Platinum Protection Program," which gives you 20 hours of him as a legal consult. When I had CCW Safe, I thought it would be a good idea to have him in my corner if I needed his knowledge. I still have his Platinum Protection program; I feel like it's just a little extra backup to have another brain that can contribute to my defense if I need him.

I have AOR but I wanted something to cover the civil side which is where I was going with my initial question. Something like AOR + USCCA, etc. AOR for criminal and USCCA for civil.

That must be new because they specifically didn’t provide civil representation or red flag. Outside of defensive shoots those are my two main concerns.

I think especially here in CA I am more worried about losing my asset's. For those that have AOR where they don't cover civil penalties do they give advise as to putting things in a trust so they can't be touched? Maybe advise on umbrella policies?

Looking at everyones concerns where USCCA & CCWsafe are more memberships to a club and hopfully everything goes right they will have their attorneys represent you. You think you could get both types of coverage with one company even if it was at a premium price.

After all it is CA and everyone wants to sue whether they have a case or not hoping you settle. Figured if all my asstes are protected less chance of that.

Are there actually any firsthand stories here from California CCW shootings that were justified and afterwards had legal trouble?

The only one I know personally is "Quarterboregunner", who was manager of what is today Reed's Range in San Jose (about 25 years ago, when it was still called National Range), and had to shoot one of their customers who had taken other customers hostage and was threatening to kill them. The victim survived and was sentenced to 20 years or so. Quarterbore got a CCW afterwards, I think from the SFPD. I met Quarterboregunner once, I think at Jackson Arms in SSF; he didn't have interesting legal trouble after the shooting.

I sometimes get a feeling that CCW insurance is more about the paranoia of people who carry, and who think that a few $$$ and a piece of paper can cure the effects of a shooting.

Here is AOR civil policy. It looks like they will cover you during the civil case, but if you lose, they wont be helping you pay the judgement against you.

"While AOR will defend you in a civil defense case that arises out of a self-defense-related matter and cover all legal fees, costs, and expenses through trial, including any appeal, we do not pay any civil judgment (ex. medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages, etc.) if a civil judgment is entered against you."

I could be wrong on this but the issue I am seeing the potential of USCCA or CCWsafe (and other similar companies) is they dont seem to be "ethically obligated" to cover you if you are charged criminally, which here in CA almost always happens even in a good shoot until the DA figures it out. the criminal charge could very well get dropped later but just being charged could be enough not to be covered on the civil liability side?

I don't have a "stake in the game" with any company just trying to figure out what is best for me. I think they all offer something worth while. Also at the end of the day if a company is willing to pay my civil liability thats great I also want to be proactive and protect my assets ahead of time as best I can.

I assume USCCA will let the lawyer of your choice to represent you and still cover the civil penalty? Even if the lawyer doesn't have the California bar passed?
