Double Stack 1911s are underrated

I'm sure they are properly rated as they are pretty popular. However I did find the patent for the original double stack, polymer, modular double stack frame, filed in 1992. Interesting that this design was relatively obscure until only a few years ago. It's a neat read (don't worry there's pictures):

Double stack 1911’s, 2011’s or guns like them such as the Wilson Combat EDC X9 and DWX have really become very popular over the last few years. I think you are definitely missing out if you don’t have one example of it.

I've got a couple wide body 1911s, and they are fun. I've got small-medium size hands though and my Caspian especially is a bit on the big side for me. That being said, they shoot great. The more modern 2011s are a bit more manageable as far as grip size goes, I definitely want to get one in the near future.

Maybe you have been sleeping on them… I snagged my first STI almost 10 years ago now, and I was late to the game. I’ve since sold/traded close to 10-12 2011s in that time and currently the collection sits as pictured. If you’re just now learning about 2011s, you probably have just not been that invested in guns/competition shooting

Beautiful, but I just can’t get behind the 2x4 grips on most of them. I got a DWXc for that reason and love it.

The title was supposed to be a joke about people arguing over the "hottest guns" on here, I mostly wanted to share the patent as it's interestingly largely unchanged from the original design today. But one of the great things is that the grip is completely modular and you can either have 2x4s or grips like atlas that are more Euro (CZ) shaped. Someone really needs to make an 800 dollar 2011 for the roster so that we can steal the frame for custom builds. I'm currently working out getting a frame through SSE and it's a pain in the

The modern grips from Atlas, Cheely, etc. mimic that of CZs. Original double stack frames and even the original STI frames were definitely rather large, but I found that even those were better than the blocky Glock grip, which was the original reason I switched platforms. I had set aside 2011s for a minute in favor of CZ, but once I got a Cheely grip 2011, it was game over. CZs have since been sold

I used to think the same as far as getting frames. But really, by the time you buy a low budget frame, and commission a full house custom built on that frame, you’re in Atlas territory. Time to build a custom is outlandish now (my last full house custom 1911 was close to 3 years). Atlas build is 6 months, tops. Now there are so many Atlas pistols in CA it’s easy enough to find one via PPT, you can have a damn nice Atlas pistol in hands within 10 days
