I just don't get the motivation to buy it and not use it unless it's a collectible. It's like if I went and bought a $60k turn key racebike then never went to a race.

Maybe some of these folks are affluent enough that they can see something, buy it, and it's no big deal if they lose interest. It would be like you or me buying a hat and then never wearing it.

That's not far from the truth. I have an Alpine M1 Carbine that looks as if it has about one box of ammo through it, at most. My grandfather bought it as a response to the Watts Riots. Apparently a lot of folks in suburban Los Angeles were concerned that the brouhaha might spill over into the surrounding communities, and took measures to protect themselves.

There was an old timer that worked for my dad back in the day that lived somewhere around watts when the riots were going on. he bought some 25 acp Saturday night special and always kept it in his buick literally until the day he died. (same car, same gun in 1965)
I do think the majority of the safe queens are either average joes that want to off it, or LEO off roster for extra $.

I have had countless PPT's come in where the seller is telling the buyer "this has never been fired" when it has at least 3000 rounds through it.

For the legit 50 round or less ones I fall into that category sometimes. I own a lot of guns so its hard to go shooting and put more that 50 rounds though a gun sometimes.

Yeah, I don't think my grandfather's. 25 had nearly as many rounds through it before I inherited it as it does now.

Recently I was striking a convo with the guy next to me at the range. He was Trying out which guns to list for EDC. He bought 4 or 5 guns and was taking them out for the first time to decide which he would want to list. I can imagine he may sell the rest?? That scenario kinda makes sense for the quick sales. I will say by looking at his targets. Kinda wish he didn’t do EDC lol. At least not for a while after some serious training.

Oh... yeah. I was thinking of old guns that hadn't been shot. A couple years ago the ATF was looking closely at members of certain professions who were buying off-roster guns, "changing their minds," and then reselling them at substantial profit. I don't know if that practice is still a thing, or if people in those professions have wised up and started doing more legitimate things to earn extra cash.

Like the Pasadena PD LT a few years back.

I was at the ‘old’ 2A Zone when that guy showed up to DROS, then immediately PPT, five CZ Czechmates (including two Parrots!!) to waiting buyers.

I left shortly after, but my understanding is the FFL (who was the prior owner of 2A Zone) ended up telling the dude to leave, since it was obviously a business transaction.

Its really not surprising once you start accumulating firearms past "rookie" numbers. Some people buy a lot of guns and never get around to shooting them. Its a non issue.

A lot of people are "gun owners" more than they are "shooters".

Same way there’s dudes with $8k mountain bikes that never touch a trail, project cars that never see a track, or $4k guitars that know three chords. The ownership/tinkering/collecting/preparedness side of the hobby scratches the itch for them more than actually burning 2k rounds a year.

Meanwhile some of us are obsessed with improving. eg working on form, precision, response times, recoil control, consistency, etc. We assume everyone approaches shooting that way, but I honestly think most people treat guns more like insurance policies or collectibles.

Why are so many firearms for sale on the classifieds literally never fired, or often only been shot once or a few boxes through it? I love shooting all of mine personally. C&R type rifles etc I get it because I barely shoot those too, but regular modern handguns?

What would be more interesting is what percentage of these are off roster. We know people come here to make an absolute fortune and take advantage of those of us who are not as fortunate to have connections out of state to get us these firearms. When I see a private party with 10 brand new off roster firearms for sale and they're all $3,000 or more, it pretty much pisses me off and it should never be allowed unless that person has an FFL and is posting here is commercial dealer
