Extensive Handgun/Pistol/Rifle/Shotgun Rating Chart

It's a good snapshot of the "market" but more like a reputation chart than a reliability chart which manufacturers should pay attention to because perception drives sales.

Springfield's reputation got a boost from the Echelon which I agree. Glock has the reliability reputation, but I'd like to see them push innovation the way Springfield did with a modular FCU.

One thing I'd consider is ranking platforms instead of manufacturers. The low hanging fruit example is the variance between a P226 and a P320 or an M&P 9 and 10mm can be bigger than the variance between entire brands.

HS products makes a fine gun SA slaps their roll mark on it.

SA makes M1A’s and 1911’s. Good guns, but the Hellcat, Echelon, and XD are not representative of SA’s manufacturing or quality.

Op, did you cut and paste all this information from somewhere, or did you somehow get a hold of some meth the other night and spend the next 6 hours grinding your teeth and putting this chart together? 😁
How else do I write reports at 1 in the morning

Both the P320 and P226 are ultra reliable, in fact the M18 beat Glock in garand thumb’s torture test IIRC - and S&W won.

Glock is about 15 years late to that boat…

Pretty sure that if you go up to Frisco they'll give you all the meth you can eat for free. Think it was part of some genius assembly bill. Aren't you up in the northern part of the state anyhow?
Sacramento county. I think the democrats give out fentanyl instead of free meth these days

Top-tier duty / serious carry brands

BrandReliabilityPremium qualityRead
H&KA+APossibly the most overbuilt mainstream duty pistol maker. USP, P2000, P30, VP9, HK45 are serious. Your P2000SK belongs here.
GlockA+BThe baseline. Not luxurious, but simple, reliable, easy to service, huge parts/mag/holster support. Glock’s LE positioning is built around reliability and support.
Smith & Wesson M&P / ShieldABModern M&P 2.0 and Shield pistols are absolutely serious. Practical Glock-level reliability, better ergonomics for many shooters. S&W actively sells M&P pistols and rifles into LE/military channels.
WaltherAA-PDP/PPQ/P99 lineage is excellent. Great triggers and ergonomics. Slightly less institutional track record than Glock, but not second-rate. Walther markets PDP/LE pistols around reliability and ergonomics.
BerettaAA-92/M9 family is combat-proven and extremely reliable when maintained. PX4 is underrated. Beretta’s M9 served as the standard U.S. military sidearm for decades.
SIG SauerA-/B+A-P226/P229/MK25 are elite metal duty pistols. P365 is dominant. P320/M17/M18 has major adoption but also controversy and lawsuits, so I rank the brand high but not blindly. SIG notes M17/M18 adoption by all U.S. military branches.
CZAA-CZ 75, SP-01, Shadow, P-10, P-07/P-09 are excellent. Great shooters. Less common in U.S. LE logistics, but mechanically very solid.
FNAB+FN 509, FNX, FNS, Five-seveN. Serious military/LE manufacturer. FN’s LE catalog includes pistols and rifles.
Springfield ArmoryA-/B+BHellcat, Echelon, XD/M, 1911s. Echelon is modern and credible. XD line is reliable but less prestigious. Good practical brand.

Premium / competition / boutique handguns

BrandReliabilityPremium qualityRead
StaccatoA-ASerious 2011 duty/competition brand. Expensive, fast, excellent triggers. More maintenance-sensitive than Glock/HK, but very capable. Staccato says its duty pistols are approved by 1,600+ LE agencies.
Atlas GunworksA-A+Elite 2011 competition/range pistols. Very premium. Not your rough-duty mud gun.
Wilson CombatAA+Top-tier 1911/2011/custom shop quality. Expensive, refined, reliable when properly configured.
Nighthawk CustomAA+One-gunsmith 1911/2011 boutique. Beautiful, expensive, premium.
Ed BrownAA+Classic premium 1911 maker. Excellent fit/finish.
Les BaerA-ATight, old-school, accurate 1911s. Sometimes very tight break-in feel.
Dan WessonAAOne of the best production/semi-custom 1911 values. Better than Kimber/Springfield production 1911s in fit.
Alchemy CustomAA+High-end classic 1911s. Premium, tasteful, expensive.
Infinity / SVIAA+Elite competition 2011s. Extremely premium, expensive, specialized.
CabotB+A+Art-grade 1911s. Premium object more than duty tool.
Taran TacticalB+/A-AHigh-performance race/movie/flex guns. Price includes performance plus brand tax.
Bul ArmoryA-A-Strong 1911/2011 value. Generally very good for the money.
Shadow SystemsB+/A-B+Glock-pattern premium-ish pistols. Feature-rich, good, but not more proven than actual Glock.
ZEVB+A-Gucci Glock world. Nice machining/features, but I don’t rank it above Glock/HK for hard-use reliability.
Agency Arms / custom Glock buildersB+A-High-end customization. Quality varies by build. Better looking does not always mean more reliable.

Value / budget handguns

BrandReliabilityPremium qualityRead
CanikA-/B+BProbably the strongest budget/value striker brand. Great triggers, high feature set. Not Glock/HK institutional level, but very good.
RugerA-/B+BRugged, practical, usually reliable. Not fancy. Revolvers are especially strong.
TaurusBC+Much improved from older reputation. Some models are genuinely good, but QC still not Glock/HK/S&W level.
PSA Dagger / RockBC+Good value. Dagger is cheap Glock-pattern; fine for range/backup, not my first serious CCW over your Shield/PDP/HK.
ArexB+/A-B+Solid Slovenian maker. Underrated.
IWIB+/A-BMasada/Jericho are solid. Good brand, not huge in U.S. pistol market.
Grand PowerB+BInteresting rotating-barrel pistols. Good but niche.
SAR USA / SarsilmazBC+Turkish duty/value guns. Some solid models, less premium.
StoegerBC+Budget Turkish/Italian-affiliated options. Functional, not premium.
BersaBC+Good budget pistols, especially Thunder series. Not duty-premium.
TisasB+/A-B-Surprisingly good value 1911s. Not Wilson/Nighthawk, but good for the money.
Rock Island / ArmscorBC+Budget 1911s. Usually functional, rougher fit/finish.
Girsan / EAA importsBC+Good value clones/copies. Inspect and test.
KahrBB-Thin carry pistols. Can be reliable, but long trigger and sometimes break-in sensitive.
KelTecC+/B-CInnovative, light, weird. Useful designs, inconsistent polish.
SCCYCC-Cheap defensive pistols. Not my recommendation.
Hi-PointB for “it works”DUgly, crude, heavy, cheap. Surprisingly functional, not serious-premium.

I would probably bump the S&W Handgun grade to A+, considering the California Highway Patrol adopted the M&P 2.0. I'm more of a Glock nerd myself, but even I'll admit the M&P 2.0 has phenomenal ergonomics and a better factory trigger than the Glock. All things considered, this is pretty solid and well-researched.

For reliability of the Sig pistols, do you see any grading differences between the P22X, P320 and P365 platforms?

Wow. That's quite an extensive gun collection you have! Or did you have to borrow some guns from your friends in order to make this detailed assessment? If you can, please list the model numbers of the guns you tested.

It’s AI.

The table was made with AI and it offers a starting point for discussion. The issue is that this forum doesn’t work like a wiki to evolve. AFAIK posts can’t be edited after a certain point, so a giant table like that eventually turns into noise instead of a useful living resource.

The part that doesn’t make sense to me is that Gawenator assumes that anything he doesn’t immediately understand must be "AI". So if a point goes beyond his talking points, the response isn’t to engage with it. It’s to dismiss it as AI-generated.

You can’t spend half your time acting like the forum’s self-appointed OPSEC expert, military authority and detective while telling everyone you’re right, everyone agrees with you and the issue is settled, then turn around and complain that people are making things personal.

I'm convinced he's actually a kid.

Man wish I was still 25! Cope and seethe, as they say. Not everyone can afford top tier military optics, I get it.

Didn’t have the balls or intelligence to argue your point but had the time to make cheap personal attacks behind the keyboard. We both know you’d never say that to my face though.

Where do you live at?

You’re just angry that I’m a detective and you aren’t, apparently. What do you do for work, other than troll
