FFLs that dont transfer AR Pistols

I just attempted a PPT at Reeds in Santa Clara and they refused to PPT a maglocked AR15 pistol with DROS paperwork stating it’s a semi auto pistol because it didn’t say “Pistol” on the receiver.

Most FFLs will respect the law, share any stories of FFLs that make up rules to avoid transferring AR Pistols.

I mean that would be an easy way to manufacture an AR15 pistol. You simply illegally build it up from a long gun receiver (ignore that Federally there is no such thing, we are only talking DROS) and then have your buddy sell it to you as a pistol PPT and now it is in the system as a pistol. I am not sure why Reed's cares as unless you told them you were doing that, they would have no clue. However, I do suppose it would be easy for the CA DOJ to see that lower was once registered as a long gun and now it is showing up as a pistol. Assuming they care unless you do it a lot or this thread gives them the idea to start running queries on AFS to search for this.

My shop is not responsible for your illegal activity. I PPT whatever legal firearm you bring me. If the CA DOJ shows up asking about it, I will just tell them what I know. I highly doubt they care.

OC Guns and next door The Heavy Machine, both will not do AR Pistols.

I walked into OC Guns to PPT sell a AR Pistol that I bought from PPT several months before at same location. The man bun owner said no, they called their lawyers and was a no too. So I walked in next door, The Heavy Machine, and they ask me what did OC Guns say which I answered No, and Reza the owner goes There's our answer. I asked if OC Guns and The Heavy Machine uses same lawyers or if same owners, but no answer.

(I found several months later that if you are LE, friends/family, they will do it.) (The person I bought the AR Pistol from was a firearms instructor, a friend of OC Guns.)

We went to Riflegear, which was done within 15mins of entering. No questions asked, no issues given.

I've used several dozen FFL's over the years and I can count on one hand, without using all my fingers, the number who had all of the laws figured out. My best and favorite FFL was only in business for a couple of years and he got a LOT of my business, but he moved on to a much higher paying gig which I don't blame him for.

They won't listen if/when you try to educate them either. Rare occasions maybe, but I don't even try anymore. Just on to the next place until I find someone that wants my not-small annual gun budget to be spent there.

When it comes to FFLs, I have to give a shoutout to CAguns sponsor and all around good guy UG Imports.

They are not only well versed in the relevant laws, but has the best system for doing transfers. I was in and out in 5 minutes yesterday. Literally faster than when I lived in a state where I could use my CCW to skip the bg check.

Some dealers are smart and listen to reason. Give them one chance and if they don't want to hear it, go elsewhere. And a smart dealer would want your PPT business because even though it is probably a financial loss, they ought to be trying to sell you accessories and ammo which isn't a loss and trying to earn your long term business.
