As tempting as it is to descend into that particular rabbit hole, I’ll refrain — perhaps because, after more than a decade in the U.S., I’ve yet to fully understand why certain circles persist in treating me as a second-class person
Not knowing which culture you are from, there are a lot of very insular nations (broad generalization) that are not accepting of members of different cultures. The people of the United States have always made it hard on immigrants; Irish, Italian, black and brown especially hard and super hard on poor immigrants and people who can't communicate in English. However, I think the US is better with immigrants than most other nations with the notable exception of places like Canada, at least we used to be.
Now, we are becoming.... you know what, I don't know what we are becoming but, it certainly doesn't resemble the spirit of the Statue of Liberty that inspired the sonnet; The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus:
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
