Hello,

I'm getting a Gen 3 G22 and want to get a 9mm conversion barrel for it. I've never converted a handgun barrel and there seems to be conflicting information surrounding it.

Some people say just drop in the barrel and shoot it. Others say to replace the RSA, extractor and ejector housing with 9mm ones.

Looking for info from people who have done this and what their results were.

Thanks in advance for any input,

Matt

You dont need to replace the ejector. Not sure about extractor, maybe try it. I would use a 9mm RSA pretty sure its not same as a .40 RSA. All these parts are cheap and easy to install.

The RSA is the same for the 17, 22, 34, 35.
KKM barrels are solid, but pricey.
The extractor between the 40 & 9 are different, but you should research based on the barrel if you need to swap.
The ejectors are also different between the 40 & 9, but a lot of people get away with keeping the 40 one. Seems to be mixed reviews.
Perhaps start with the conversion barrel swap and test. You can always swap the other parts if you experience issues.

Some people say to change the RSA but after looking into it they are the same one for the both cals.. (that's exactly why I made this post)
I understand the extractor and ejector are different dimensions but most people say they just seem to work.
I'm going to do what you had mentioned, get a good barrel then see if I really need to update any other parts.

I'll reply to this post once I shoot the pistol with just the new barrel. I'm probably going with KKM, I've read about issues with Lone Wolf and StormLake, Bar-Sto seems to be the best but not needed in this application.

Thanks again

Matt

OP which route did you end up going on the barrel and how is it performing? Did you need to swap any other parts? I am also looking to convert my G22 to attempt some USPSA production matches.

I ended up trading for a G17 slide so I did not get a conversion barrel.

From all the research I did most people just swap the barrel and if there any issues at all they just replace the trigger housing with a 9mm one. (which houses the ejector)

Good luck!

Matt

I know this is an old thread and OP moved on. But in case others stumble on this...

I have a G35 and I install a Glockstore 9mm conversion barrel and it just works. No ejector, extractor, or RSA swaps. With the heavy slide, I can feel the difference between a converted G35 vs a stock G34.

i did this, no change in extractor, ejector etc necessary. The Glock 22 frame is 100% the same as a G17. The breechface of the 22 is slightly wider than a 9mm, but tolerances for extractors aren't that tight because they need to account for variances in cases anyway. You can even use G22 mags, only time you have an issue is if you have 15 rounds in then the spring pressure pushes that last round out because the lips are slightly wider.

I have done this with the Glock 22 and Glock 23. I simply dropped 9mm barrels into each of them and changed zero parts. It runs perfectly. As the member above mentioned, sometimes on the last round with a 9mm cartridge in the .40 mag it will lock back with the round still in the mag. So it would be better to use 9mm mags with 9mm ammo, but the .40's work in a pinch.

Its the easiest and most inexpensive way to change calibers that I've ever seen. It really gives you a lot of flexibility for a very reasonable price. Contrary to what some people think, the larger exit hole and extra space around the 9mm barrel in the .40 slide does not affect accuracy at all.

Thanks for the replies guys!

It's nice that you can just drop a conversion barrel in and go shooting. I'll do that if I ever run into this again.

Matt
Its not a conversion barrel. Its just regular Glock 9mm barrels for the Glock 19 & 17. I don't use the conversion barrels - IMO they are useless. If you ever decided to buy a Glock 9mm slide to go onto your .40 frame, you wouldn't be able to use that conversion barrel with it. Why would you want to buy a 9mm slide you may ask? If you look around, there really aren't many aftermarket slides available for the .40 Glock models. There are FAR more 9mm slides available in all sorts of configurations and colors. A conversion barrel would severely limit your options.

Hmm, I'll have to look into that. I've never heard of just putting a factory 9mm barrel in there. Why do they even make conversion barrels then.. Learn something new every day.

Thanks for the info!

I just put my 9mm 17 barrel in my 22 slide and it's sloppy in the slide hole. Not to say that "it wouldn't shoot a bullet" but I do not think that is a viable option for a true conversion to 9mm. I can imagine the POI would be off as much as the barrel slops around in the slide hole.

Thanks for the info though.

This!

See this reference in terms of dimensions.

And I'm here to tell you the sloppy fit does not affect POI at all. I've done it in 3 Glocks. Looking at something isn't the same as shooting it.
