In CA, used guns are held 30 days by the dealer and the dealer has to report the gun details to the state so the state can theoretically catch the stolen guns before they are resold.
That only works when the gun has actually been reported stolen of course and that's why there is a CA law requiring you to report a gun stolen as soon as you find out.
That's also the basis for the new law requiring you to confirm that you are in possession of all your guns each time you buy a gun.

On top of that the stolen gun database has plenty of inaccurate records int it. I purchased a S&W .38/44 Outdoorsman from cabals last May and it got flagged as stolen. The gun in the stolen gun database is a Model 15-3 that someone reported the assembly number in instead of the serial number for the stolen gun. It’s taken this long to get it all cleared up and the local PD released the gun back to Bass Pro and I’m just waiting for more paperwork to get to the DOJ before I can finally re-DROS it.

Not sure what I was thinking. The Federal Government would totally never keep a database or require the gun store to keep 4473s for a certain number of years or anything like that.

No. The Feds are required by *cough*cough* law to not keep *cough*cough* records of background check records. It's against THE LAW! LAW! There is no way the government has a database containing the data. None at all. It's "unpossible" for such a thing to happen.

But, officially, no, there is no registration associated with a Federal background check. Forget the state of California saving all their data and making it available because it's not important. If there were, the only data they would have is your information and that the gun is a rifle, pistol or shotgun. But never mind that Form 4473's are digitized now and the government has a copy. There's no way they would ever illegally associate a background check with that Form 4473. It's just not American!
