This is the correct way to look at it. Lack of diversity in any market creates stagnation, which is always bad for the consumer/end user.
Same thing happened with Intel years ago. AMD was on the brink of bankruptcy after a bad product release in 2011(if you're curious, look up AMD Bulldozer) and Intel was steadily gaining more business. Jan of 2011 Intel released their core series branded chip design & reintroduced hyper threading. AMD released bulldozer in October 2011 and it was a flop. Was barely breaking even to its predecessor.

Intel dominated the market from there until ~2017. Intel had been essentially regurgitating their design up to this point & the market standard for consumer desktops were 2 or 4 cores with hyper threading. AMD came back and introduced their zen architecture, which offered up to 8 core/16 thread processors in March of 2017.

Not going to dive any further, but essentially this moment was the reason why we have insanely powerful consumer CPUs today. Intel had no reason to make a better product until another company came along and lit a fire under their ass.

Competition is necessary for innovation.
