Hobby not Hobbying as hard.

As I got older decided to shrink to the bare minimum. For me that is one:

Handgun
Revolver
Shotgun
Rifle

Enough to keep me shooting, carry, train, etc but not enough to be overbearing. I was once in the triple digits lol.

I still have a few guns to sell off atm, but have to wait until next year because of the bs laws/limit.

After a heart attack and the realizing the burden my wife would have if I didn't make it. Has changed my view of my safe. Love plinking but i am no commando. Just a dad with cool clutter. Sad but really being honest. A headache and burden.
Has anyone had to sell or disperse a firearm collection of a passed loved one?
What are the must keeps for a safe? Thinking i will hang on to a
1 glock
1 shotgun
1 revolver
1 22 rifle
1 AR
And a some ammo

I haven't sold any legacy firearms, but then again, my family was never full of gun owners aside from my brothers and me. I sold a lot of my older firearms; I bought out of interest rather than practicality, like an M1 Carbine, a Beretta Jetfire, old .22LR rifles, and some 12 Gauge shotguns. I only have a handful left, and they're chambered in 9mm, 5.56, .308, and 12 Gauge. Basic as hell, but it's more of a way to reduce clutter and prevent stocking more expensive ammo. I know reloading exists, but I'm nowhere near experienced enough to do that. Maybe in the future. I would want to add a few collectibles one day, but when the finances are more stable.

As for the hobby, I went over 10 years at one point without buying or even thinking about guns. It comes and goes. Nothing today can compare to what the hobby was like in this state back in the mid 90's though. Those were the golden days and I'm thankful I got to experience them.

Sometimes you should treat it like working out/eating healthy/general good habits for a healthy and balanced life. When the motivation/passion dies, maybe just hit the range/dry fire as needed to maintain a basic level of proficiency for carrying/home defense.

Just like how I often don't want to get up for that morning run or hit the gym, discipline kind of picks up the slack for me a lot of the time when my mind or other factors don't agree.

That's considerate of you to think of what your wife will have to deal with if you go first.
I have had similar thoughts, like if both of us die, what will happen to our dogs? So I put a piece of paper with a close family friend's phone number, and that we have dogs at home that need to be tended to (like if my wife and I both croak in an accident).

Similarly, do you have any close friends who are familiar with firearms, who could assist your wife in the case that you kick the bucket first? You and this friend could discuss values, game plan, ahead of time.

It's normal for hobby interest to come and go, and come back again also. That's just life. I used to love Legos but I don't play with Legos all day anymore. etc

This right here.I have alot of them too but some get put aside for others at times.Mostly mine i can do in summer and some winter.
late sept to late april its dirtbike,glamis,shooting,little snowboarding, are main ones but the glamis seasons have been kind on on hold vs years past didnt even get the buggy out this oast season,dirtbike only a couple rides,Shooting alwasy seems to be easy and got a couple snowboard days in

Summer its boat,stand up jet skis some camp and fishing. seem to mix them up but hope to get back camping soon.Been a boat and jet ski summer.

Just depends on mood and other family stuff going on but theres been times i used the boat only once and years past might only have shot once a year but 2012 started going out more turned those to weekend calico area camp trips as other family bought guns already had trailers so we would all go 3 times a year and did that til we moved.

If you don’t need immediately the few hundred to few thousand dollars your sales would make, I would just keep em. Even if they are just sitting in the safe.

Truth be told MOST gunowners are probably the once a year warriors who shoot at indoor ranges and have a 50/50 chance flagging everyone. So your guns sitting in the safe is NORMAL all things considered.

- Give it to children when the time is right
- Give it to a friend
- Sell em if you really want to and or need money

Sometimes its just reevaling reasons and purpose of training. First I trained only pistols and now I am stepping into the PRS world.

It's too much to say. Once 2000 hit, that's when the high capacity magazine ban started and it's been downhill ever since.
It's not just the laws either, it was a combination of multiple factors such as eastern bloc weapons and ammo flooding into the US, making the hobby just stupidly affordable, and the culture as a whole. You could walk out of a military surplus focused gun store with a mint condition Russian SKS and a crate of 1300 rounds for about $300 total. There was also way more places to go shooting. The massive population increase in the last 30 years pretty much killed that.

Been through this 2-3 times now. Eventually realized I just lost more money buying back things after I sold them all off. Plus the stress of dealing with buyers. Now I just tell myself to sit tight.

In supplement: you don’t have to sell anything unless you’re in a financially burdened situation. But instead of buying more stuff, maybe put that towards something else over time, every time you get the itch.

Gold’s been good, and sits inside your safe all the same if you really want it to, for example.

I don’t get this. Even if my loved one left me a stamp collection I care 0% about, I wouldn’t just dump it, I would take the time to research a bit, ask stamp forums, etc. people suck

As someone that has lost a mother, grandmother, and father is in hospice all in the last 14 months it’s not sucking. It’s just to much to deal with. Outside of things my kids have told me they want I expect everything to go into the dumpster. It’s not an insult it’s just the easiest. We found a few things as we cleared the houses, but 90% of it was just junk from a life time of buying crap.

Don’t sell anything, just leave it in the safe. Doesn’t hurt you there. Don’t have to use it. Unless your kids are completely against firearms. That becomes a different project.
