Hey y'all. We recently moved so neither my drivers license, car registration nor my passport have the current address. Gotta wait til October for a new drivers license since I’m due for a renewal and that was the best appointment I could get. Called an LGS and asked what I could do. Ended up going on CFARS and updating the AFS page with my current address. Then I got a fishing license with the correct address. Am I good to go? Even though the AFS page still says in progress? I do have Gas and electric bills with my current address I can show for a DROS.

Passport and proof of residence *might* be enough but the DOJ has been cracking down on FFLs in recent years so you might have some pushback.

With the fishing license, passport, and proof of residence (utility bills), you might be good to go.

Definitely don't go to Turners, they are the most strict with documentation in my experience

Call the FFL you intend to go and ask to speak with their compliance person/officer or have them call you back. They will be the one who will tell you what exactly you need at their store to go thru with a purchase or PPT xfer

Nahhh bro you don't need an appointment. I just had to get my REAL ID to buy guns with the new crackdown. I joined the DMV waitlist on their website, and when I was tenth in line I drove over with my docs after doing the online portion. They processed a new DL, added my full middle name and took my photo and I got it in the mail six days later.

Entire process was 1 hour maybe.

If his passport name doesn't perfectly match the other ID's then he's screwed. Easiest solution is just get a new DL same day. They all have to have either same middle initial or full middle name

Actually in looking further on the DOJ website, you may have to have a CA ID or DL to purchase a firearm. My mistake and apologies

This actually would likely be your best bet. Just make sure you have every document you need for the REAL ID printed off on paper, they don't accept electronic documents.

If you can spare the time on a weekday morning and don't mind waiting a bit longer, you can just go to the DMV *right* when they open and stand in the 'no appt' line. It might add 1 hour or so to the visit, but you won't have to wait until October. You can do everything while there, though you may have to wait in line once for the test, again for the Real ID docs, and then get your picture taken.

Dude you don't even have to do that. Do what I did and "get in line" virtually. I had to wait like an hour or two at home but the line kept moving and then when it got closer I got in my car. However some people no show so suddenly I went from tenth to like 2nd in line within maybe 7 minutes. And if you aren't there within like 1 minute they skip you. I only waited at the DMV for literally one minute before I was called.

Yep, I did the same thing while waiting outside the DMV to open and had the same experience. Also had several people in front of me only have email copies of their proof of residency and have to leave to get printed copies.

Not all DMVs offer the virtual line though I don't think, only a few down here in SoCal did last time I renewed.

Is it just the written test? Or do you have to take the full driving test (which is rare unless you don't already have another states license)

Written test= walk-ins are okay
Behind the wheel test: need an appt

Valid CA DL or ID, if not a real ID you need your passport (passports do not have addresses). Since DL does not have your current address you will need a Government issued document with the correct address, fishing license will suffice.

Assuming you don’t have a Real ID, as long as your passport and ID are still valid, not expired, and names match, that checks that box.

Fishing license counts as an approved “change of address” document, so that can be used to confirm current address.

Technically fishing license works as a proof of residence as well (if you’re buying a handgun), so depending on your LGS, that should be all you need. At least where I work, that’s all we require.

If you're looking to buy ammo, make sure you login to CFARS and change the address of one of your guns to the new address. AND have your other documentation.
