Inbound to Cali... and Learning

We are a married couple who have just this week received PCS orders to the greater LA area. We have been trying to get posted back to Texas for the last 12 years or so… and just can’t seem to make it. One of us is active duty (detached duty) … and one is retired. We are looking forward to the beach and activities of So-Cal!

We enjoy plinking, post 1000m precision (no sleds) and pistol poker/spades. Both of us have a 900m milk jug challenge, and one of us has the 1200m. Both of us have attended the Army unit level armorers’ course and have held Sig and Glock certifications.

The best range we have found during our travels is the BLM run, free range, located in Grand Junction, Co. It is1600m, with concrete-caste benches.

TGC was our main “guntuber” until this week. Currently digging into “Cali-tubers” (recommendations gratefully accepted).

Current systems:
- Uberti 1861 Colt Navy (never fired)
- Russian M1895 Nagant Revolver
-A few Hi-point C9 (stashed around the house)
- Some Glock 22s and 23s converted to 9mm (extended family standard for commonality of parts among the LEO and retired members)
- Caspian 1911 (personal build… never again)
- Beretta 950 minx (.22short)
- 5 AR systems (2x .223wylde ... 1x 9mm Glock mag'ed … 2 blank lowers)
- 1960 Winchester 77
- Rem-700/30-06
- Rem-700/308
- 2x Mosin-Nagant w/Hex receivers

We use Glocks as EDC.

No… we don’t believe in the magic power of shotguns.

So far, we know we must alter our AR systems…and dump the majority of our Mags; how much is what we are researching. Much of the data we have pulled from youtube etc. thus far seems… outdated. Any direction to learning resources are appreciated.

Offhand, mags can be blocked to 10 rounds (usually as simple as a properly placed pop rivet!), and the ARs can be altered to a system like the Juggernaut Hellfighter or similar so minimal alterations are needed to "evil features". Or you can go goofy grip "fin" and all the other silly things that are required to not be "CA evil"...

You probably should try posting and looking for the flowcharts on CalGuns.net (note the "L") if and when the site is accessible - lots of info there IF the site happens to be working...

Depending on how long you expect to be "behind enemy lines", you could also consider having a trusted family member in a free state keep the things that you'd rather not neuter for CA compliance in a safe storage situation. Perhaps get a safe that will hold what you need at an out of state location, and keep the keys so there aren't any issues of unauthorized access.

Do note that, while you must take care your guns do not run afoul of CA law (as you are doing), guns brought into CA by military on PCS orders need not be declared/registered. However, that exemption is NOT available to dependents - so, of course, all the guns really belong to the service member.
