That's another thing in favor of 2011 adjacent/DS 1911/widebody 1911 platforms that use different and more widely available mags. Such as the aforementioned glock compatible stuff.

Most people running modern 2011 mags don't stop to consider how easy it is to identify that and the approximate window in which they were made/released. Many of the standard cap 2011 mags you see are not beyond the SOL. There are even visual clues you can spot from a dozen feet away.

It's a byproduct of either being caught up in the hype, assuming the chances of getting caught are minor/the consequences are minor, or they just don't know any better or are new to the platform and don't realize how much it's changed in just the last 2-3 years, let alone the last 5+.

Are you aware of any cases where people were prosecuted based on this? This topic comes up a lot and I still haven't heard of a real life example where this was an issue

didn’t hear about anyone prosecuted for mags alone, but if caught with standard capacity mag while committing another crime - that’s different story.

Oh for sure. But we are in a position where magazine possession is essentially legal pending Duncan so only acquisition is potentially prosecutable, and I've never heard of a case where that was a thing. It's hard for me to imagine an LE who can identify a 2011 magazine by year, caring about that.

Recently? Not that I can recall. But, as someone else said, this is mostly an enhancement or something else that comes up in the course of the investigation or prosecution of another crime. The most likely thing to happen if they are an issue is they’re just confiscated. But, it would be easy for it to become an issue should a LEO or prosecutor want to add things on to an existing charge.

I’m sure no one wants to be the test case for this like that one guy who did actually have to produce receipts.

I’m simply stating for those that are unaware that those who possess standard cap mags for 2011s should be aware they’re easier to identify than many other kinds of mags. So exercise good judgement in your choices and when/where to make use of them.

sure but I don't think the risk is any higher than having Glock mags for instance. I would say Glock mags are much more recognizable to the average LE as well. Most LE would probably assume a metal magazine is older based on looks alone.

I have owned probably 20 of the 2011 platform guns, all STI and most were frame purchases that have been custom built.

The two mentioned in the OP are good guns but wouldn't call them "top tier gems". Nice guns for sure but do not confuse price with quality in this area.

The Atlas guns are probably where you want to look, TBH, if your budget allows. Otherwise, try out the Glock mag variants where you can and pick the one you like.

My guess is that the LEO is going to be far more worried about you in the front yard, half naked and fully turnt than when the magazine in your gun was made.

We've been doing the 2011 thing since we were selling guns out of my garage. My advice is don't go broke over it, try to put hands on whatever youre looking at before committing to it (even better if you can test drive one), buy what you like, and F- what other people think about your choice at the end of the day. Oh and don't forget to enjoy it, don't baby it, and shoot the out of it.

Hey they came up with a vaccine for covid-19 in about 3 weeks, they should be able to come up with one soon enough to keep people from spending $4,000 on a new 2011 and then relapsing and doing it again. Perhaps two or three extra booster shots would help with that problem

They make single dose vaccinations called Infinities. I joke, but that does tend to put some people off from buying anything other than them a lot of the time. Or anything on the higher end of full custom.

The Stealth Arms Platypus is the most immediate that comes to mind that takes Glock magazines. It's off-roster but they show up in the classifieds periodically. It's a very solid contender though not technically a 2011.

Platypuses can be purchased through SSE. 2A Zone sells them. Kovert Arms in Irvine also sells SSE guns such as various Atlas models. 2A Zone also had a few Atlases for sale and on display.

My closest gun to a 2011 is the Dan Wesson DWX Compact, which is a hybrid. I also have a TS2 Orange, not a 2011. I like both better than the Platy and Erebus I owned for a while.

I got my 1st taste of 2011's couple weeks ago and now I want one! I had the pleasure of shooting 2 top tier gems. Phoenix Trinity H2 & TTI Sand Viper. Although these 2 are definitely out of my price range I will be looking at possibly buying a Staccato or something else as I'm learning more about all these other 2011 manufacturers.

I 100% agree with this. I’ve shot and owned many 2011s. Many different manufacturers, models, etc. Based on price, availability (especially in CA), quality, bang for the buck…. Atlas wins ALL day. You don’t have to pay any off roster markup and you are getting it for the same price as the rest of America, if you go through the right avenues. I believe in the buy once, cry once train of thought. Atlas fits the perfect spot, not passing the point of diminishing return.

Some will say, “Then why not Infinity?” I would really love to own an Infinity, but in my honest opinion, I think they’re ugly as sin! If I could go back and do a full custom like they used to, I’d consider it. But now you’re married to the drops. And at that point, I don’t want to pay an extra $4k over Atlas for something I’d hate to look at.

Infinity aesthetic is if they didn't make guns they would make bongs and vapes. The vast majority look F-ing stupid as hell
