Kids intro to shooting

Just went out to BLM land with my 10 year old a couple weeks ago. She is still in the .22 but hits the target and more importantly is very familiar with all safety practices. Definitely load one round at a time as others have mentioned, I always do for new shooters and kids more often. Also BLM land okinawa spinach great to utilize as you have more space and much more of a relaxed atmosphere.

I started my son off at age 4 with a BB gun.
It was about 10 yards. Random targets, paper, old dishes whatever.
I had him set up on a table and a chair or he would stand up. Only shooting off iron sights. Taught him all I could about safety. Always wore glasses, guns always treated like it was loaded, never point at anything you didnt want to kill. Always down range.
We did that monthly, sometimes a couple times a month for 4 years.
At Age 8, Castro Valley shooting range allowed him to shoot rifles.
I put together a 22lr bolt action with a bipod. Put a cheap big 5 scope on it.
Once I zeroed the scope, he was stacking rounds at 50 yards. Proud dad moment.
Now he is 19, and wont go to the range with us anymore. Go figure

Never too young. Mine started at 5 and 7. I think it’s up to you and your judgement on how well they understand the rules of safety and follow instructions. If they seem to do well with that, then they are ready. My kids were shooting 556 pretty young, my 7 year old daughter’s first time out she was shooting an AR. The 5 year old started with a 22. I don’t think you need to start with airsoft or bb guns but up to you, maybe if you already own that stuff.

My son is 8 this year and I haven't felt hes mature enough. He asks about my gun cabinet that's locked and my drop safe all the time.
