what’s that interview part like? - are they just physically reviewing the gun make/model/etc?

They ask you the same questions you answered on the initial application. It was ridiculously fast for me since I've never had any run-ins with the law or moving violations. You are explicitly instructed to not bring your firearms to the interview, so you should write down all the information you'll need to double check that everything is correct on the application (make, model, caliber, serial number).

It's also supposed to be the last opportunity you have to make any modifications/additions to the firearms you want listed on your license, although I've heard some people have success in making changes during qualifications, so YMMV.

Seems like they did change.

20 days between application and in-person? That's insanely fast. When I applied in feb of 2023, my in-person was originally July of 2025 but was moved up to April of 2025. I didn't get my permit in hand until Nov of 2025 and I did everything as quickly as possible.

Nice to see they are turning and burning to get them processed now.

09/22/2026- Interview at LASD. If you use google to map the address, IT WILL MAP TO THE MIDDLE OF A STREET. Make sure you map to the "Los Angeles Sheriff's Department - Sherman Block Building". The gate guard will tell you where to go. Interview took 6 minutes. My application was blank with the exception of other state CCWs, so my interviewer was basically just looking for verbal responses to the application questions. They call references 7am-2pm. All of my refs were called around 1:30 the same day. Two missed the call and were called back the same time the next day. I was told that reviewing the background check will take ~5 weeks, then I'll get notice to go to training. One of my references said that they were basically asked the same questions as on the application

This is fast considering what it used to be. Good to hear some improvement in this area. Back when i did it, it was interview 12 months ahead of time...
